I just recently got this NN2DSXL and I think I am going to install home-brew on it.
Currently I don't have any CFW Plugins on my DSTWO+, is it worth installing one?

So if I use my DSTWO+ Flash-cart to Home-brew my DS through the Gateway plugin does Home-brew install to my device or to the Flash-cart/SD Card?
I'm not sure how home-brewing exactly works. What is the better or current recommended way to home-brew you device with 3ds.guide?

So.. yeah, I'm currently using some of the plugins for the DSTWO+ like TempGBA, CATSFC and some others. But I figured that I should just home-brew my NN2DSXL and bring it up to speed with RetroArch's emulators, they should definitely perform better than the DSTWO+ Plugins with all the updates they have had recently, right? for sure..
What system version are you currently on?

To SFC emulator, you can use Snes9X by bubble2k16, it's the best SFC emulator on 3DS.
To GBA games, you can make them into VC for 3ds(.cia), install and play.

Is the GBA VC Emulator the best GBA emulator at the moment?
Yes. While I'm not sure it technically counts as Virtual Console, the 3DS's built-in emulator (simulator?) is by far the best way to play GBA. The next best option is the stand-alone emulator mGBA.

GBA VC has the best compatibility at the moment, but it's not a emulator. It means you cannot use some functions like "quick save/load" or cheats. It can just guarantee that you can run GBA games perfectly.

You can run them, but it isnt quite a thing of running perfectly. There are games that still have some errors and lag issues.

I have installed the nightly from today (2017-12-18) and found out that psxrearmed has been updated from version r22 c7dde5e to r22 ec665d1. However, it feels for me like there is a minimal boost in speed and a bit better sound

Castelvania Symphony of the night : from 24 up to 58 fps

You're gonna have to post pics if you want anyone to believe a nightly brought an over 100% performance increase

sure ..... i meant that the fps fluctuate between 24 and 58 and i have not said anything about a performance increase of over 100 percent, only that i have the feeling of a minimal improvement.

You can't install CFW or access 3DS homebrew with the DSTWO+ on 11.5. You will need to either use another flashcard and use ntrboot, have it hardmodded or upgrade to 11.6 and use the DSiWare method.

Depends. If you are on a compatible version for either the Gateway plugin or their GPL-violating ReiNAND ripoff, Freegame, you should be able to as those are the only ways to run 3DS programs with a DSTWO+. If you can use the gateway clone feature or fake reinand you should be able to install it with ease using 3ds.guide.

So, if I install the Gateway plugin you mentioned (clone feature) on my dstwo+ I should be able to run the Gateway plugin and then (correct me if I’m wrong) flash ntrboot to it so I may use Ntrboot to use the boot9strap exploit and then follow the 3ds.guide?

Would you be able to show me were I can find instructions on how to install Gateway on my DSTwo+?

Or do you think I should just purchase the R4i Gold 3DS Plus?

No, the gateway plugin does not work on anything above 9.2 (iirc, could be less). Also NTRBoot doesn't work with Gateway anyway. You use the guide to install b9s, not after.

I'm pretty new to the HB + emulation scene, so sorry in advance if my inquiry is a bit too basic.

I have a N3DSXL, and I've been running Retroarch, .3dsx version 1.6.7 stable, through HB launcher 2.0.0, which I access via NinjHax v 2.9. I do NOT have CFW -- I am running stock firmware 11.4.0-37U. I've managed to get games running, but I noticed they were very slow, and so I was wondering whether there was anything I could do on the settings side of things or whether this was the best I could get without any CFW. At this point, I'm using all default settings.

Here are my experiences:
  • NeoGeo - FBalpha core - Real Bout Fatal Fury Special - 24fps (all these fps numbers are by eye and nothing calculated)
  • SNES - SNES9x2002 core - Separation Anxiety - 30fps
  • PS1 - PCSXReArmed core - Xenogears - 6fps.
I understand that a lot of PS1 games won't run well on 3DS, and that's fine, but I do think I should be getting better performance on things like NeoGeo and SNES (I will try Genesis soon). I've seen youtube videos with NeoGeo running 60fps easy. The consoles in those videos had CFW and were running the cia versions, but is that really the only difference? Is .3dsx running thru NinjHax really only capable of about half the performance of .cia with the same settings? Or is there some tweaking I can do to squeeze better framerates out of my current setup. If I can get to 50fps for NeoGeo and SNES, I'd be extremely happy.

Thanks in advance!

How's the performance with SNES and GBA on the Nightlies over 1.6.7? N3DS using CIA version and I get crashes here and there on GBA, and EVO (SNES) runs at ~40fps. :o

Last night, I tried the 12-21 nightly (.3dsx with same non-CFW setup as in my previous post), and I got slightly better performance. On RBFFS (NeoGeo) I managed to eek out 28fps or so during the fighting. So the 12-21 nightly (1.6.9) performs better than the stable 1.6.7., but it's not anywhere where I'd like it to be. I wasn't able to gain any noticeable performance by minimizing video settings. It's weird because the UI said it expects 55fps, but in-game it goes down.

I did try the standalone SNES emulator that was presented on this site (threads / snes9x-for-old-3ds.435568 - I can't post links), and that runs perfectly - 60fps with sound on a few games I tried. I think I'll give up on Retroarch 3SDS for now -- I hate not being able to Neo Geo -- maybe I can just grab a 3.60FW PS Vita for emulation needs. Or wait for Retroarch development for Switch. I'm not really feeling up to installing CFW on my current 3DS, because even if I did, I'm not sure I'd get the Retroarch performance I'm looking for. At least I can dump my SNES library onto the 3ds because this other emulator works so well.

Edit: SNES emulator that works perfectly for me is the exact one Muxi linked above.
