Hey folks. So I recently started working for a company as a graphic designer. I've not really used Mac's outside of school. But they provided me with a 2011 MacBook while they waited for a newer one to come in. As I've been using it, it's really been making me want a Mac. Despite previously not really liking them. So the other day I snagged a mid-2014 MacBook Pro 13 inch on craigslist for $350. Now I would prefer to have a 15 inch and possibly something newer. As now my work just got me the current 15-inch MacBook with touchbar and it's ruining my experience with the Mac I just bought. Still, if anything I could sell mine on eBay and get a 2014 15-inch, that would be alright by me. The thing is, it seems impossible to find a decent deal on one. I just got really lucky getting the one I did for such a low price. But I was hoping I could find a 15 inch for somewhere around the $800 range. Is that possible? Does anyone have any tips of places to look other than eBay? I also worry about condition. Again, I got super lucky and the Mac I got looks brand new. I fear trading in this lucky machine for a not so lucky one. I don't know. I'm just kind of spewing out thoughts as I go here so if you take the time to read this, thanks!

Keep your 2011 one. If you buy a new one, you'll become this guy

The 2012 non retina display macbook pro's are still the best laptops that Apple has ever made. Not only do these models have 2 USB 3.0 ports, SD card reader, and an ethernet port, but you can also still upgrade all the hardware inside these models. Everything is modular for the most part. With the newer macbook pros, 2013 and beyond, everything is more and more integrated or soldered into the motherboard. No upgrade possibilities. The specs that you purchase with these is what you are stuck with for the lifetime of the computer. The very latest macbook pros are a complete pile of garbage. They're more like glorified macbook airs or Ipads. They come with only a couple USB C ports. Hence the reason why they call these "dongle book pros." You will need adapters for connecting just about every piece of hardware or peripheral you own. The 2012 models, especially the ones with the I7 processor are still perfectly fast and powerful for 99% of what people use these computers for. I have a 13" 2012 Macbook pro that has a 2TB hdd, 1TB SSD, and 16GB's of RAM installed. Try getting these specs on a newer macbook pro and you either can't, or you will have to pay $3000+ for specs anywhere close to this. You can pick up lightly used 2012 models for $400 to $700 depending on whether it's 13" or 15"

Case in point...User "330" paid $3000 because he didn't understand the beauty of the older 2012 models. Apple did away with the modular design of the 2012 models precisely so that they could milk consumers like "330" for maximum profit. You can get the same specs for the most part as "330", minus the retina display and slightly slower processor for under $1000. Not to mention that you won't have to use dongles/adapters for everything like "330" has to;).

I can afford a $3000 computer as well. My PC is well over 5K. No, the truth is that you just don't understand value and macs. Knowledge is power, and Ignorance is expensive... The computer industry has been profiteering off the ignorance of consumers for a long time. Lately, apple has mastered this art.

Your PC is well over 5K and you need a hackable PS3. Cool story bro :rofl2:

Not only that, but you felt the need to judge my purchase when it wasn't even the main subject nor I was talking to you. If that doesn't set off red flags for envy, I don't know what does. Don't worry, you can afford nice stuff too one day ;) and if not, well, how about you keep your "precious" advice no one asked for yourself? The anti-Apple and anti-rich mentality is seriously getting out of hand. Literally none of what you've written so far is relevant with the question from the OP.

I know macs and PC's inside out as well as anybody out there. I've been running an online PC business for 7 years that involves building, and selling very high end, custom tailored PC's to customers around the country, and world. PC's that are typically in the $3000-$10,000 range. I have built over 1000 of these high end PC's over the past 7 years. So yeah, I really don't know what I'm talking about. A clueless Apple fanboy knows more, and better;). As for hacking a PS3, and Wii U, I like the flexibility of console gaming when I don't feeling sitting on the PC. The girlfriend prefers playing console games more anyways. Plus, I like the challenge of hacking a lot of things out there.

And... What I said in the above post is very relevant for the questions the OP was asking. For some reason, everything to you is some kind of strange money argument that keeps going back to what you can afford, and what others apparently can't. Sad... Anybody that knows anything about computers, Apple or PC, knows that the newer Macbook Pros are complete garbage in terms of specs, flexibility, etc.. People are paying a lot more for a lot less with Apple these days. Apple is more interested in pleasing the share holders than making computers anymore that are leading with function and form. Steve Jobs never would have approved half the crap that Apple is producing these days. Apple is on it's way downhill, and will probably suffer the same fate that it had when Jobs left the first time. But, in the meantime, Apple can depend on clueless consumers like yourself to lace the pockets of their shareholders. If the OP was smart he would take the advice from somebody that knows a thing or two about computers. Otherwise, with your advice, he will over pay for a computer that puts you in a straight jacket from the start, forces you to use countless adapters/dongles, and tells you to take a hike if you ever want to upgrade/repair the battery, storage, RAM, HDD's, etc...

Oh, and by the way, I'm not anti Apple at all. I'm using a Macbook Pro right now to respond to your messages. I have been an Iphone user since 2008. I also have 2 27" Imacs, and a Mac Mini. Am I envious of your $3000 dongle book pro purchase? Hardly. Obviously, I'm not anti Apple;). What I am is anti-apple stupidity in the post Steve Jobs era;).

If you're a graphic designer get a surface pro 3 or 4 and get a big monitor and mini-display port to hdmi adapter or a dock. Then you can draw with the surface pen.
As a graphic designer, you are probably still better off with a Mac and a wacom tablet.
