So after seeing that years after the production stop of the Dreamcast a game comes out, I am very tempted to buy a Dreamcast. I have a few question about it for the DC Pros out there :D

I heard that you can play Backups without the need of a chip. But I also heard that DC's after 2000 couldnt do it. Is that true ? Is there a way to play backups on this if I accidentally buy one ?

The ones before 2000 can play backups without a chip if I got that right. Does it only work for games from my region ? If I have a PAL DC, can I only play PAL DC games or also NTSC games ?

What is the Utopia Boot Disc for ? I dled the 1.5 one, because I read that you sometimes need it.

I hope that someone can answer these questions :D

I don't know all of the answers but my DC is before 2000 and it can play backups without any chip. for some of the backups, you need to put the boot disc in first then it will prompt you to put in the backup disc. I hope this helps.

There is a way to play backups on post-late 2000 DCs, you can read about it here http://dreamlover.tecbox.com/#6.1
The Utopia boot disc is used to load backups that aren't self-booting. However most games you download will be self-booting. The Utopia boot disc also can be used to load out of region games, so yes, you can run NTSC games on a PAL DC.

If it's self-booting, then region doesn't matter, the Utopia boot disc is unnecessary. Utopia can be used to run retail copies of out-of-region games though, so if you get an actual copy of, for example, Shenmue II (PAL only), you'd be able to use the boot disc to play it on an NTSC-U DC.

So as long as the CD is self-booting, everything should run on the dc. Thanks for your answers. I cant really pick a best answer, because everyone of you said something useful :D
