I understand that school is there so you can get a job when you're older, but why do they force us to learn several different subjects, regardless of whether you like them or not? For example, I want to be an IT expert when I'm older. What should I be learning then? hmm... IT? Maths? Maybe physics if I want to code a video game? Ok, now think about this: where the fuck does geography come in? Where does RE come in? Where does (high school) English come in? exactly! Why am I being told to learn all this if I'm just going to forget about out it once I leave school! Waste of time!

So that students can have a proper foundation in whatever tickles their fancy when they leave. Schools don't have enough time, money or funding to personalize your courses to the life path you may want now.

Where does Geography come in?
If you were to relocate to get the job you actually want, how would you know where it is?

It's in Germany!
Germany? Dafuq is Germany?
You know, that country in Europe.
Uh-huh. .. what's a Country and what's an Europe?

Everything they teach in normal school is just the basics of everything essential. There are many career paths you can walk through but we'll never know if you'll stick down said path.

@gamefan5 I guess all subjects are useful up until a certain point ~ so for example, yes, you'll probably need to know some basic countries. But will you need to know the 3 different types of rocks? hell no

I'd say the main goal of a varied education is to make pupils into rounded individuals with a general respect for others and a broad base of useful transferrable skills. Everything connects in some way to everything else. Geography, for example, is not only the location of countries and capitals, but also includes cultural and anthropological study of populations and earth science (volcanoes, weather etc). Population studies links to philosophy, religion, ways of being and marketing. Marketing might be handy if you want to sell your apps worldwide. We need a broad foundation also because we cannot predict very well what skills will be needed in the future. Computers were not in schools when I was young so no IT for me. No internet for research either. But, all the following of instructions I learned in chemistry, the research methodology I learned in many subjects, all of the transferrable skills, made it easier for me to adapt to the changes in technology.

I can maybe agree with education being narrowed down a bit to compliment a student's talents and goals, but there are some things that just shouldn't be left out of a curriculum. Things like, oh, I dunno, math and language (whatever your language is). Being able to do at least simple multiplication and division, even basic algebra as a LIFETIME tool is beyond measure in worth. The same can be said for language classes. When I was going to middle school, half the kids my same grade could barely read, and this was 8th Grade. Don't even get me started on their spelling -.-

@Nyap For geologists, geology is their job and their "normal life".

You seem to be under the impression that the school is obliged to provide a tailor made education just for you and whatever your career aspirations happen to be, and that any subjects which don't interest you are pointless. You're wrong on both counts.

@Nyap I'm not talking about Creative Writing. I'm talking about actually being able to read and write in general. Even in jobs where little to no formal education is required, you still have to read instructions, maybe even complete paperwork. And beyond that, it's just fucking sad when I see someone my age or older, who shares the same native language as me, struggle to spell and make sentences that aren't total nonsense.

@mashers I just find it unfair how I'm forced to take several different subjects, even the ones I don't care about and I don't believe I will benefit from, and be expected to do well in all of them

And when I say a subject is "pointless", I mean that I don't see myself benefiting from having the knowledge of that subject. Not that humanity would be better off without science or geography etc

You think it's 'unfair' because you're too young to understand that you are not more important than the other children in your school. What do you think would happen to their education if your school had to waste time pandering to your requirements? As someone who works in education I can tell you that schools are under so much pressure you cannot even imagine, and saying its 'unfair' that you don't get to drop the subjects you don't like and do what you want all day is completely ridiculous.

Just be fucking grateful you get an education. Some kids in the world would kill for the opportunity you have - to sample a wide range of topics laid on by the taxpayers and the government at zero personal cost except your time, and then do whatever you want with your life. Tell a starving Somali or a Syrian refugee you think that's 'unfair' and they'll fucking laugh in your face.
