YS Seven was originally released as a PSP game in 2009-2010. Here we have an "HD" upscale port to PC, with an updated localization, Steamworks integration, and most importantly, achievements. But does YS Seven really hold up as a PC game now in 2017?

<p>YS Seven follows the story of Adol and Dogi as they adventure in the lands of Altago. As with any RPG story, as you begin your adventure you discover that the lands of Altago face many dangers, from massive monsters, called Titanos, and disease to natural disasters like Earthquakes. Oh no! And of course Adol is the only person to wield the ability of the Five Dragons of Altago and use their powers to help save Altago from certain ruin! Ok, so the story isn't exactly "new", even for 2009, so I won't be doing a full review on this game. Let's be honest, anyone interested in YS Seven has likely already played YS Seven in the 7 years it's been released. </p>

<p>YS Seven is an action RPG, and not much as changed since it's release. Combat takes place seamlessly in the environment, with three main damage types; Pierce Damage, Slash Damage, and Strike Damage. Enemies are weak against one of these damage types, and each of your three party members can inflict this type of damage. Dogi and various other "Dogi-esque" characters do Strike damage, Aisha and other "Aisha-esque" characters do Pierce damage, and Adol can do all three. "But Tom, what do you mean by all those "Esque" characters quotation mark, quotation mark?" Well, unfortunately for YS Seven, none of the additional party members on your team are all that unique. No matter what happens in-game, you will always have a character that does Pierce damage, or a character that does Strike damage, and as far as I can tell all of these characters play virtually identical in battles which basically makes them lose their individuality altogether during gameplay.</p>

<p>This latest PC port of YS Seven boasts few new features, which include Upscaled "HD" textures, a new localization, Steamworks integration with achievements...and that's kind of it. While some of the upscaled textures look pretty nice, including most character models, not a whole lot of love went into the textures for the environments. Buildings don't look that great, scenery is a bit lacking in places, and sometimes even the gigantic Titanos monsters look a bit shoddy despite all the PC config options being maxed out. I've added a (tiny) screenshot of the PSP version, so you can sort of see where the differences are, but in retrospect there's really not much. The game itself runs near flawlessly, thankfully, so despite being a little less polished graphically in some places, it at least runs at a buttery smooth 60fps.</p>

Verdict
What We Liked ...
- The few updated models and textures help make the game look a little less ugly.
- New localization is decent, despite there not being too many changes.
What We Didn't Like ...
- But it appears most textures simply received the poor upscale treatment, which doesn't look great at 1080p.
- Combat is basically button mashing while occasionally switching characters.
- Party members have no individuality or unique quality to them during gameplay.
