It's not what people might think it is. The "emulator" will actually be an interpreter for the the custom coding language the guy makes.

So...

1 - This "emulator" will not run 3DS games or other eshop software.

2 - In order to run the software on the 3DS, this interpreter (and your game?) need to get onto the eshop in the first place. If it's just the interpreter then that's pretty much a second whatever-the-fuck that BASIC-like language is that's already out. If it's the first AND the second... well that's even worse because it means you need to actually make your game and send it into the eshop to get it on...

I think they should let it on the eShop, it'll keep people from hacking their 3DS (Except those who do it for piracy)
Theirs already things I'd like to do with that app, even if I can't code.

IT's like petit computer. The plan would be that the interpreter would be available on the eshop, the rest would run on windows/mac/linux etc. Assuming the above, your homebrew code would be run from SD or somethin glike that.

That's for the DSi, and It looks like all the work is done on the DSi/3DS. with that app you could do much more, and possibly use the 3DS' hardware also.

3DS too.

And it's not like you'd be able to make loaders or do system modification stuff with this, which is a big draw to CFW things (screenshots, cheats, menu replacements, etc.), and it won't play existing games, people would have to specifically make them for this system, right?

So it's like Petit 2.0.

I was more thinking along the lines of web video players, youtube specifically
Edit: I should've thought about the fact that it may not be possible with the coding language.. :/
So nevermind that comment above. Unless of course it's possible :P

I would buy this app, if only to try all the cool homebrew I'm sure would be made for it. But I'd probably try coding something small myself too, even though I'm not a fan of BASIC.

From what I can tell this is a [potential] publicly released 3DS devkit which can be used to create and play user-made games though a Petit Computer-like 3DS application...

...sounds a lot like Homebrew to me! :)

This certainly seems like a great way of allowing anyone with access to a PC and the eShop the ability to create their own games without needing to hack the system itself. So yeah, I suppose I can't complain, but personally I would still rather hack my 3DS for the benefits that only kernel mode can offer.

This guy is a legit developer, but he is a dreamer. Nintendo is not going to allow an app that plays free 3d games this early in the 3ds's lifespan.

Petit Computer was a special case because the dsiware market had already long passed its prime, and was no real threat to its new game market.

(also, badmouthing Nintendo's toolkit while talking up 'homebrew' is not going to sit well with his bus. partnership with the N)

It'd be pretty cool to see this tbh. I'd happily pay $2 to code on a 3DS. And I'd definitely take the time to learn whatever I need for it too.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
