Damnit, I really want to see Mario Odyssey here soon. And yes, I know it can't happen yet, but I still want it to happen.
You said it like we are able to actually play any of them. You can even see all the Switch library here but as long as there is no way to run them it's all useless.

yeah but if a decrypted odyssey dump were to show up i am pretty sure that it would mean they achieved 3.0.1 privately
it would be a good indicator that tings are progressing behind the scene

I just going to hope that there should be a exploit where the firmware version 3.0.0 is disguised as 3.0.1 or higher.

Its not the firmware's number that makes these games unaccessible. The number is effectively an arbitrary number (that happens to have a hardware check in the eFuses to make it impossible to go backwards) but it in and of itself isn't anything more than a construct of sequence. Its like 'time', time is just a creation to measure the entropic parameter of evolution of the universe.

Masking your firmware wouldn't allow you to read games that are beyond that firmware (assuming that there is a change in encryption keys) because its the encryption that matters. If your firmware doesn't have the ability to read a file (which is the case from 3.0.0 to 3.0.1), it doesn't matter what your firmware tries to pretend.

Its like a change of language in human terms, and you don't the know the new language so you can't read the book.

"Please be mindful when posting in threads that we do not, under any circumstances condone piracy, and will not facilitate the spreading of illegal ROM files, or any other kind of warez."

But this thread is literally about game dumps. Am I the only one that sees a logical flaw here?

Don't you remember that a couple of years ago the homepage had a scene release list?
GBAtemp started as a ROM sharing site.

That's why you can talk about "piracy" freely. As long as you don't post links or the name of the site, it's okay.

But isn't talking about piracy freely and talking hacking systems condoning piracy?
We're not exactly bashing piracy here, quite the opposite. Anyone with half a brain cell and a single eyeball would be able to see straight through that disclaimer.

Best I can tell you is this is how GBAtemp works.
You aren't the first to ask this question, and you won't be the last.

I want to play devils advocate. :) Lets take the example of boardgames, f2p games and... football. :)

Lets say one person buys a game. But to enjoy the game he needs others who play. To be competitors, to be community, to talk. There are some industries where its perfectly normal that one player pays for a game, multiple others can participate for free - and the only thing the industry gets is word of mouth about a good experience - and maybe resulting from it - a few more people who buy the game.

It started with "the one kid with a football", and has juuust been extended to f2p games, where the addicted part of the gamer population will pay for everyones ability to play these games (for free). The notion of experiencing "created" participatory experiences for free has always been a part of culture.

Apparently this stopped with AAA games, when someone invented a concept called "DRM". So we all watched cinema advertising spots and decided that some people not paying for experiences is a very bad thing - and that they are ruining society as we speak.

Thats why shunning is really the only possible solution, and everyone who thinks differently is condoning a crime.

Apart from f2p consumers, which are a valuable part of the community regardless if they pay or not, because those games can legally monetize on addicts. So everyone is happy. Especially EA whose games I dont buy. (Or play...)

Oh - and by the way, the real issue is, that copies in the digital age are free, and every general purpose computer is a copying machine (think printing press) by design. Actually - you cant even move a file, without copying it in some sense. You cant execute a file, without parts of it being copied into memory.

Some companies came to realize, that interest and attachment, means "money can be made there" - but for some reason, in the videogame industry, recently this all lead to optimizing for gambling mechanics. And to exploiting addiction prone personalities. You know - good business.

The moral of this? Talking freely about motivations and mechanisms behind piracy is bad - and we shouldnt do it. Also f*ck your poor friend, maybe he can play a f2p game, or something. Piracy is not a victimless crime! Think of all the artists that dont get paid, if no one knows them and they havent signed with a major label, that can spend millions on advertising, selling your poor friend the idea, that - when he grows up, gets a job and earns money - thats what he'd like to spend it on.

Lets take this a step further and look at the education sector. Free education cant exist, because if everyone would get what they want to know for free, no company could make money - even if there was high interest in a specific sector.

Thats why we all know - Piracy is bad.

Regardless of any circumstances.

We've all watched the cinema advertising and read the FBI warning screens that told us so.
