GameStop to sell Sony PlayStation figurine toyline

With the rampant success of Nintendo's amiibo toys, it appears that Sony is trying to slightly capitalize on the trend. Revealed via a GAME Espana video, it showcases six figurines from major Sony IPs, such as Crash Bandicoot, Bloodborne's Hunter, Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout, Parappa the Rapper, and Heihachi Mishima from Tekken 7. These figures will release on March 23, 2018 exclusively at GAME/Gamestop, will be manufactured by their subsidiary "ThinkGeek" and toymaker "Totaku", and will retail for $9.99 each. Unlike amiibo, however, these will not serve any function ingame, and are merely for collection purposes. A Kratos figure will also release later this year.

If I had the spare available cash, I'd get the Parappa figure tbh.

Anyways, I can see a few people making some custom amiibo figures out of these things.

Looking at the toy line up and the Playstation Allstars games makes me realise that Sony doesn't have much of a first party library to dive into and they have to rely heavily on the third party. A great PS figurine line up would include

Jill/Chris from Resident Evil
Lara Croft
Solid Snake
Final Fantasy 7-9 characters

Last of Us (seriously, Naughty Dog might as well be part of Sony now)
Ratchet & Clank
Sly Cooper
Twisted Metal
Ape Escape

**Looks at Crash figure.**
**Crash is owned by Activision.**
**Thinks statement makes no sense.**

Wanna try again?
The difference here is Spyro is already apart of a giant toys to life series, so Activisition likely wouldn't be interested in making a basic Spyro figurine because it might "confuse the Skylanders audience", or something to that effect.

Also why the original Spyro trilogy is unlikely to see a remaster anytime soon, the Skylanders series, even now after the general hype is gone, is extremely popular and hella more profitable than the original Spyro, or even the "main" series games following the trilogy, ever were. In Activision's eyes, it's likely not worth the trouble making a Spryo remaster. At least, not until Skylanders finally shits the bed, anyways.

As to the news, I'd pick up a Hunter and a Crash as long as the quality is better than the turds Nintendo shits out with Amiibos. Granted, their later ones are at least somewhat better, but somewhat better shit is still shit. Would like to see Jak and Daxter and maybe some Ratchet and Clank figures as well, and Spyro if Activision get's their head out of their ass.

It's not amiibo if it doesn't have a chip. It's just yet another collectible figure. Of which plenty exist... It's not really like Sony is copying Nintendo.

Yeah, as a guest character for one whole level in one game.

Spyro was the "pioneer" of the entire Skylanders series and has like 10 different figurines across all the Skylanders games. Biiiiiiiig difference between a guest character and being a part of the entire franchise.

Pac-Man games and cartoons are still up and running and it has a brand new look. However, for Super Smash Bros, Sakurai made them use the classic one. I'm sure they could do the same as well.

Merely for collection? Seems like a wasted opportunity.

What, you're a fan of having to physically go to stores for your DLC and deal with shortages?

I'm a fan of PS franchises so this is neat. I don't think I'd get them unless they're actually more detailed than amiibos.

Crash himself was already a Skylanders figure, so this point is moot. Not to mention that iteration of Spyro has, thankfully, been thrown away into the garbage after they realized they didn't need his branding.

I get that. I'm just saying that having a NFC option for those of us who like to play with their toys would be nice.
I understand. While I'm not a fan of physically locked DLC, I support your concern and agree these would serve better if they had some sort of functionality with the actual system.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.

South Park is great cause they always touch on relavent issues going on today, and make something funny out of it.

@BigOnYa were you always up to date on the current events and issues of the time or were there issues that you first found out thru south park

Most of the time yea I knew, I watch and read the news regularly, but sometimes the Hollywood BS stuff, like concerning actors slip by me. I don't follow most Hollywood BS (example: the Kardasians)

  • S @ salazarcosplay:
@BigOnYa there were relevant issues before south park was made, that's why i think a south park prequel/spinoff would be great. Randy and his friends in their child hood

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, like them running in high school together, getting into stuff, and how they got hitched and had kids. And how the town of South Park was back then compared to now. That would be cool to see.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@salazarcosplay if they made a prequel, it would still be about current issues, cause it doesn't make sense to make it about stuff that happened 30 years ago that nobody cares about anymore

    it's too late
