A little over year means a little over 12 months. You would have to say "I didn't get a wii u until last year" for a new year joke. The phrasing is specific between the two.

But how do we actually know Switch will be hacked on higher firmware, and how do we know it won't be a repeat of a PS3-like situation? People seem awfully confident in knowing something that may or may not happen

We don't know, we also don't know what will happen to 3.0 homebrew. If it's like DSi then you're not going to be missing anything.
