Hey everyone,

So I bought and softmodded my Wii back in early 2016 using this guide: GBAtemp -> How to SoftMod a Wii and play backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games
I did all of steps 1-4 but only updated USB Loader GX in part 5. Admittedly I only backed up my NAND after doing all of this, since I didn't have a big enough SD card at the time.

Everything seems fine, I've been playing Wii games off my USB HDD and I can confirm that my GC discs still work perfectly. Ideally I'd like to maintain the original console functionality for the mostpart (really just being able to play Wii and GC discs) as well as playing Wii and GC games off a HDD as well as some N64 virtual console games.

I installed Nintendont (haven't tested a backup GC game) and moved along using that same guide to install a virtual console game, however I got a d2x error. While a d2x error was mentioned in that guide, this page: wikidot -> GAF's Wii Homebrew Tutorial -> Installing the d2x IOS for use with USB Loader got me thinking about how up-to-date that guide is. Both that GAF page and CompleteSoftmodGuide -> cIOS Installation seem to mention d2x cIOS installer.

There's also another guide: GBAtemp -> Beginner's Wii Hacking Guide 2015 - USB Loading, Wiiware/VC Vackups, GameCube Backups that seems to outline what I want to do, but once again there's some varying information (like Priiloader is installed, but not IOS236?). I'm also seeing stuff on this site about ModMii so I'm not sure where to go...

TL;DR

What's the most up-to-date Wii softmod guide out there right now? For what I want to accomplish play Wii and GC backups / discs + select virtual console games, which should I follow? Should I "undo" my Wii mods and start from scratch?

I should add that my softmod experience is as follows: PSP, Xbox, PS2, Wii. Of the 4 I've done the most with my Xbox, which took a little work to setup (making the USB adapter) but after that it was pretty straightforward and linear; all guides said basically the same thing. I think that's why Wii has me a little confused, since the info varies from guide to guide.

Thanks!

EDIT:

I figured I should add some info about my Wii in case anyone needs it. It's a white NTSC Wii, was on 4.3 when I got it. Bought it at a flea market here in the USA so I'd guess it's local. Bootmii can be installed as boot2, so that's cool.

Install the HBC, back up your NAND, then install d2x-v8 or d2x-v10-beta52 as IOS249[56], IOS250[57] and IOS251[58] and you're done. DON'T use d2x-v10-beta53 as it has issues with some games and HDDs.

You do not need IOS236, Trucha bug restored, or anything else.

Thanks GreyWolf! I went through the softmod guide I followed and noted all the changes I made:

dy5f1d.jpg

Row 1: The HBC is the latest version, but is IOS58 something that should be updated? I noticed in a tutorial video they have a newer version, but I'm guessing that might not be something to mess with.

Row 2: How do I confirm if BootMii is installed as an IOS? I thought I installed it as boot2 and an IOS (not sure if that's possible) but I noticed there's no "Launch BootMii" button in the HBC. I don't know if it's redundant or recommended to have BootMii installed as both an IOS and boot2.

Row 3: With the new d2x stuff, will I still need Priiloader? If so, can/should I update Priiloader? I've got 0.7 installed, but on WiiBrew I noticed they're at 0.8.2 now.

Row 4: I'd imagine I can uninstall IOS236 now, right?

Row 5 & 6: If I install d2x in the 3 slots you specified I'll overwrite those 2 IOS' (which is fine) correct? I was planning on using the app d2x cIOS installer for this; sound good?

Row 7: Just a preference, but it seems easy enough to uninstall the Forwarder then remove the WAD Manager app. I've uninstalled and then installed the forwarder WAD before.

Row 8: I'll be keeping USB Loader GX, and I'm familiar with updating it too.

Row 9: I could probably keep this for when I update, but it seems like since it's all on the SD I can just delete it if I need to.

Anyway, sorry for bombarding with questions, but I think I'm getting a handle on it now. Although I will almost definitely have more questions going forward... :P

Thanks!

Yes, just install the d2x over those slots. That's Waninkoko rev20 and it's pretty old. d2x is a continuation of his project.

You'll have to update Priiloader to 0.8.2 by rerunning the installer. The built-in update fails when it tries.

Thanks again GreyWolf! I've been working on this today and I believe I have everything sorted out :)

Question: what can be removed from my SD card after using LetterBomb to install the HBC and BootMii? I'm still seeing the letter in my messages. Not a big deal to leave it either, so I'm just curious.

Thanks!!!

You can get rid of most of the stuff after the HBC and cIOSes are installed. I just made a zip archive of my SD card when I did mine and stuck it on my computer for safekeeping.

Alright, I backed up my NAND and copied everything on my SD to my computer. Here's what I've got on my SD before I start copying stuff back:

I'm definitely going to keep /apps/ and /GxEmunand/. /bootmii/ was installed after I ran the LetterBomb, so I'm guessing I should keep that too.

I think I can safely delete /config/, since that seems to be for USB Loader GX anyway, which I'm guessing would be re-created if it doesn't exist. I upgraded from an old version of USB Loader, so I figured this might be worth doing just to make sure I'm not retaining some obsolete settings.

As for the rest (/private/ and all the loose files in the root directory) I'm guessing I can delete them, but should I keep boot.elf? Not sure if that was just for the initial modding of the Wii.

Thanks!

Keep the keys.bin and nand.bin on your computer or somewhere safe. That's your NAND backup.

The "private" folder, "installer.log" and "boot.elf" are from HackMii installer and you can throw those out. The "bootmii" folder contains BootMii's actual application but you probably won't need it usually so put it with your backup .bin files in case you need to launch it later. (You can download those files again later if you lose them.)

If you installed the USB Loader GX forwarder and put the boot.dol version of it in /apps/ I'd say go ahead and get rid of the "config" directory. GX will default to storing its data in the folder the dol is in.

Thank you again GreyWolf! My SD currently has just /apps/ and /bootmii/ since I moved GxEmunand to my USB HDD.

I think I might remove /bootmii/ (back it up to my computer) like you said though, since I'll really only use it if I need it (like my keys.bin and nand.bin).

A new question: is it possible / a good idea to have my Wii boot directly to USB Loader GX? It looks like that's the app I'll be using 99% of the time, so it would be cool to have it boot (and maybe reboot) there. Currently mine boots into BootMii, but I think if I remove /bootmii/ it'll go to the main Wii menu since that's what Priiloader has it set to.

I was Googling on this site and others and found different info about it, so I'm not sure if that's even a wise choice or not. An easy approach (that will still save time) would be to remove /bootmii/ and set Priiloader to autoboot and return to the HBC, so going to USB Loader GX would only be saving 1 step.

I'll keep doing research here for a bit.

Update:

Looks like first I need to have the latest forwarder (currently USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder_5_1_AHBPROT.wad) installed for USB Loader GX (putting a link to USB Loader GX on the main Wii menu). No big deal, I just need to install the .wad.

From there, I need to have Priiloader autoboot the proper forwarder.dol (currently ForwarderV5.1.dol) for USB Loader GX. Looks like this guide is what I'd basically follow to install said .dol with Priiloader: YouTube -> Boot Wii Directly to USB Loader GX

It sounds like someone recently posted this same question here (GBAtemp -> USB Loader GX (Greywolf) Issues With Autoboot) and they got it working, and GreyWolf said it's an issue with Priiloader, although the thread poster said it "magically" started working.

Anyway, it isn't a big deal either way, so no rush!

Thanks!

Don't use the forwarder to autoboot from Priiloader. It has a problem with passing permissions to the loader. I made a small app called "uneoboot" that you can install to Priiloader that will launch the forwarder instead and everything works fine. It's in this post. Install the dol in Priiloader and set it to load it. It will launch the forwarder, which then loads the dol from the /apps/ folder.

Everything is working great! I installed the USB Loader GX forwarder channel WAD and then installed the .dol you provided in Priiloader. Set the autoboot to installed file and it goes straight to USB Loader GX! I haven't tested rebooting to USB Loader GX but I have it set up so I'm betting it will work.

Here's how I feel now that my Wii boots straight into USB Loader GX:

Another (hopefully quick) question: any suggestions on an app to install/uninstall WADs? I used WAD Manager 1.7 by Waninkoko since that's what I used before (and it worked for me), but I noticed on GitHub that it's pretty old.

I can't thank you enough GreyWolf! I really appreciate you taking the time to help a noob like me :)

I still use Multi Mod Manager but it doesn't work with remotes that have Wii Motion + built in. YAWMM does, though.

I ended up going with YAWMM since my remote is a MotionPlus one. Plus, it seems like YAWMM works with a GC controller, while WAD Manager 1.7 didn't? Nifty.

Another question, but by no means urgent: Since I've been using Priiloader a lot more it got me thinking about the file "hacks_hash.ini". When I did my softmod a couple years ago I used the hacks_hash.ini file linked to in the guide (still have a copy of it on my computer).

I'm just wondering now that I've updated Priiloader, do I need to do anything with the .ini file? On WiiBrew ->File:Priiloader hacks.zip I noticed there are quite a few .ini files for different versions and stuff. In the 4_x folder I'm looking at 4_3 and of course the loose hacks_hash.ini file (in the 4_x directory).

It's probably because I don't quite understand the point of the .ini file so I'm a little confused. I noticed that the contents seem to differ a bit between the 4_x and 4_3 version so I was curious on the difference. And since it only gets copied once to NAND I don't know if it even matters now really, since I've already ran Priiloader with the version above.

Hello everyone,

and thank you all for sharing your experiences!

I am looking for some external HDD's that are still available to purchase, since it seems like my "black screen after loading from USB" is an USB Device issue. I have tried a couple of 32GB to 64GB sticks, but none of them are working properly. Since I live in the EU, maybe someone can link me an working USB stickor external HDD USB. I was looking for some of the drives linked in the "USB_Devices_Compatibility_List" but almost none of the 32 to 128 drives are available.

Thank you in advance, any help is greatly appreciated!

Chris

I posted this a few months ago. Going to try one more time, and if nothing works then I guess I'm screwed haha

I was looking through some old threads and saw the possibility of certain individuals reviving fully bricked wiis without a factory reset?

I am willing to send in my wii/pay someone to unbrick my wii as it has a lot of important childhood files on it.

Is there anybody left still willing and safely capable of doing this?

(Bootmii is the only thing that loads, I backed up my nand/keys, but restoring it didn't seem to work and I am unsure if I even still have them.)

So the issue I experienced was that I could not get past the health safety warning screen when I started up my Wii; it would very quickly freeze on that screen and wouldn't recover.

This issue started after I opened up USB Loader GX and tried playing one of my games where it froze up for the first time. After shutting it down, I tried starting it up multiple times of which the freezing got worse each time and came to the point where I couldn't even pass the health safety warning screen.

After a little research, I came to the conclusion that my Wii's NAND was corrupted so I was going to use BootMii to restore the NAND I backed up.

I had PriiLoader installed on boot2 so I could still access Homebrew (I was just following random tutorials on YT on how to mod and did that in the process), but I wanted to replace PriiLoader with BootMii.

I downloaded HackMii v1.2, installed BootMii as boot2, then started up the Wii...There was no freezing.

I left my Wii on for a couple of hours to see if it would ever freeze, then I started playing games through my SD card and USB devices and everything seems fine now.

I'm feeling unsure of whether the issue is completely gone now so I'm looking for some clarification: was PriiLoader the issue?
I mean, it SEEMS to be working fine now, but is there something I'm overlooking? I know I can always restore my Wii with BootMii/boot2 now, but I'd just rather take care of it now.

Also, the SysCheck reports that PriiLoader is installed, but I already installed BootMii as boot2 by the time I did that SysCheck.

If you need anymore information, please let me know.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Alright, I've got a new question for everyone. I don't think it warrants a new thread so I'll start by asking here.

I've been tweaking my Wii to get everything buttoned up, and I'm currently looking at emuNAND to play some N64 games. I got emuNAND working by following this guide. I've seen some guides that just say install the .wad, but since emuNAND has been so recommended it seems like a better route due to possible brick support.

I've got all the NTSC N64 games that Nintendo released on the Virtual Console, and not all of them work (maybe 60% or so). Looking into this, it seems like I might want to move to using NEEK of some sort (NEEK, SNEEK, UNEEK, NEEK2O ?) for better compatibility? I did some Googling on this site and found some info, but I wanted to check here first for a recommended guide. I'd like to continue playing my VC games off my USB HDD, if possible (assuming I'm not sacrificing a lot of compatibility).

Some additional questions:

1) The NAND dump I've been using for emuNAND was before I updated to d2x IOSes; is there any reason I need to redump now that I'm using d2x?
2) Said NAND dump also has some additional stuff on it when I pull it up in ShowMiiWads, like copies of the Mii and Weather channels; what can I remove from this? I just want a safe way to play VC games. I'm seeing a number of types of items: "System: Menu", "System: IOS", "System: BC", "System: MIOS", "System Channel", "Hidden Channel", and "Channel Title". Most things don't take up much space, but I would like to remove the titles like USB Loader GX since they show up in my emuNAND games list. Other than that removing stuff is more of a curiosity thing.
3) The guide I followed for emuNAND didn't say anything about the "Nand Saves Emulation" setting in USB Loader GX. I believe it is currently off. For games that have saves (like OOT), how do I make sure my saves are being saved?

I think that's all my questions for now; thanks to whoever takes the time to read this! :)
