Poll: what do you think of VR gaming?

Fove-VR-Headset.jpg

Virtual reality seemed like an impossible dream a few years back.
Now that there are several major solutions out there (PS VR, Oculus, HTC, Samsung...) VR gaming is a reality.
Well a virtual reality at least! So as a gamer, how do you feel about VR gaming?

Answer the poll and discuss!

I wasn't saying that VR is "anti-social" in the original sense of the phrase. I'm saying that the the facebook generation don't generally want to put on a headset and be separated from their phone. I think it's an uphill struggle for any activity to become mainstream if it completely isolates somebody from their phone for any length of time.
If you literally have a screen strapped in front of your eyeballs I am sure you can pipe a feed into it. Granted that would require all these great services I am apparently missing out on to actually do proper protocols but we can but hope.

What is "VR"really? At the moment it is nothing more than putting a Small on your head like a pair of glasses.
Nothing different than a good tv imho. Ah motion controls...

Buying a vr set now is like buying a small tv build in an akward pait of goggles.

Tried it, it just did not catch me. I can get immersed in a game the normal way fine. Besides the VR games market is nothing to write home about.

The option to have things respond to my head movements does represent something different from where I sit than a straight up TV with stick/mouse controls. Far from essential to have fun, and yes a lot of game design conventions will have to be tossed out or redeveloped before it gets as refined as current game dev, but definitely something different to what I normally see.

I was excited about VR for the past 20 years.
I tried it 20 years ago, when it was the beginning of the technology.

I now own a PSVR, but I'm disappointed and don't play it much.
Not about the technology itself, or the game's look or design, or video resolution.
I feel bad about VR because it get you sick so fast that you can't enjoy your game correctly :(

I hope it will improve and some day we will find how to fake the body movement to the brain/ears, so we can feel even more immersed.
It's currently a great progress in power and feeling, even if resolution is still an issue. But I wish I could play it as much as I play other games without being tired or sick.
The sickness is different for all the games I played, some are slight, some have a strong effect. it might depend the person and how the video is rendered.

I don't have a lot of games, so I can't judge very well. that's my opinion for the moment.

I'm between options 3 and 4. Voted for 'mildly interested' but even without having tried it I believe technology is decent right now (for most people).

However...the price. My pc is just below minimum, and while the price has come down it's not in the "lets try" phase. Oh, and... Wireless isn't a luxury (I just KNOW my dog will chew on these while playing :P).

And out of curiosity: is there vr porn with the woman in the OP?

Well, a PC can do anything a phone can, and then some. Not to mention there are programs to connect your phone to VR. If everybody is that ADD in the future, we'll have much bigger problems than gaming IMO.

I wish PSVR had a VR ISS (international Space Station) tour, where we could visit the real environment :D
There's one on Oculus, but please make it on PSVR (because that's the only I own and don't want to buy another one!)

VR is like having a screen in every direction and makes you feel like you are actually in the game or environment. A simple TV can't give you the same experience.

In its current state, it's no more than a testing ground for developers. It's an interesting concept, but continues to improve. But, if nothing significant happens, it'll end up as a failed concept. Much like the Kinect and other products such as that.

But there is hardly any games that truly take this technology and execute it properly. Although, I can see the horror game genre taking over VR. And it seems that resident evil already has a few months ago. And they succeeded.

I do think that gaming is but a part of what vr can do. There's the obvious porn (more important to have than it may seem) and virtual tours, but this could be a great way for architects to show designs to clients, is cheaper than flight simulators for pilots and astronauts and might make second life more like real life.

I had the samsung vr headset.
Made me a bit dizzy. And didnt really have good controls for some of the games.

Then the ps vr headset came out. Got it to check ot out. And its pretty cool. I lome the fact that you can lean in and out. It tracks pretty good.
The problems are. You need a lot of space in order to really place most games.
There are lack of games.
Can only play for maybe an hr before getting a little tired.
Hard to to play vr when others are around.

So overall its good but vr needs a little bit of work because it becomes the new norm

I've played a tiny bit of Occulus at a gaming convention, the game sucked so I can't judge the VR, I'm sure there are better games. I've also played the crazy killer spooky clown ride game on PSVR and had a really lot of fun with it, it felt like I was in there. And a few other things on PS. Once movement (both the action of moving and the resultant potential nausea) is solved, and the price comes down, there's gonna be VR all over the place. Maybe. We've come a long way from View-Master at least (I'm very old.)

Than loose the tv and game and enjoy real life. You are lissing the point. Imagine mario galaxy in VR. See? This is only for first person games without proper jumping etc. I do not want to be on rails, I'd rather watch a movie that has a compelling story and plot.
VR as of now in mainly camera, tied to head motion.

I guess you've never used a curved TV if you say that strapping two TVs right on your head is "immersion":P

VR Hentai > VR Gaming > VR Porn
That couldn't be any more true, VR Porn is trash and same goes for VR Gaming, but I've watched some VR Hentai that were amazing on HP...

That's sort of similar to how I view it, if you want VR so you can live an imaginary life, just get out already and enjoy the one you got!

Btw, after going through a list of VR games, the only one I noticed that could possibly be actually good is the new Gran Turismo if you are using a steering wheel and pedals. Now that would make for a great experience! Also, going back to what I said way back in this thread (buried under pages of posts), AR gaming is what people should be excited about! Imagine an AR game for headsets like HoloLens that scans your surroundings once and uses that to generate a level, playing an FPS game IRL around your house!:gun:

Which you can say for all gaming, not just VR. Yet people are still playing games and using their TV.

You mean making Mario Galaxy first person? I'll play that in VR. Not all VR is on rails. Just don't play or buy on rail games.
You do realize you can still use controllers with VR, right?

Even with games that don't fit VR, I can still play games as if I'm playing on a theater screen while being able to change the scenery. VR isn't just games, of course.

A curved TV isn't all directions, but nice try. Not to mention, no real depth.

I am mildly interested, but nothing seems to jump out at me about VR technology atm. I think I'll wait for a few more years to pick up a VR headset or something.

Considering I can only play first person games for about 45 minutes before getting motion sickness, I have a feeling vr wouldn't work too well for me.

Not interested unless they are also going to stick me on a vomit comet.

That's not true at all, there are third-person games in VR, there are RTS games, there's everything. Having a camera you control entirely is a huge boon, so many traditional games have camera options that make things worse, not better.

And FYI you can play Mario Galaxy in VR with Dolphin VR. Haven't tried it myself yet, but Zelda and Metroid games are fantastic.
