After spending a few months in the official #GBATemp-WiFi IRC channel, I have noticed that many members have shown a level of unawareness about all of the games that are quite enjoyable over Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection. At times, they are not clear what each game offers in terms of gameplay. There is plenty of games out there for players to enjoy with little to no offline playtime beforehand. I thought I would take a little time and provide everyone more in-depth information about all that you can do. This guide will be updated as future releases are available. Also, I will try to confine the games within the English-speaking world, unless a game is quite friendly to Western eyes or has a translation patch available.

Game types that will not be listed:
· Those that solely involve uploading or downloading high scores.
· Titles that simply offer exchanging level designs, such as Mario Vs. Donkey Kong 2, Mechanic Master, etc.
· Monster collection games, such as the core Pokémon titles, Digimon, etc.
· Card battle games, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, Marvel, Fullmetal, etc.
· Mega Man Star Force series. While it offers co-op, it requires many hours of play, which is not for casual gaming.
· The Castlevania games, as they are for shopping or unlocking a few items after long, offline play sessions.
· The Disney games, as they give you bonus customizations for your Dgamer Avatar (at Disney.com).
· Communication-based functionality, such as Diary Girl or Final Fantasy III.

The reason why I'm not listing the monster collection or card battle games is that these games are obvious as well as they do not offer a leveled playing field between new players and veterans. While they offer some great online entertainment, this guide's goal is to offer the best options for most anyone to simply pick up and play. The rest are too minor or insignificant in regards of value for internet play.

NOTE: This list is obviously incomplete, because it will take a bit of time to detail all of the games presently available. Please, no comments about "why is (insert game) not listed?" or any parallel responses. They will be added, as I work upon this guide. Once again, there is a LOT to input, so your patience is appreciated.

REQUEST: Some titles, as listed at the List of Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Connection Games at Wikipedia, do not have clear information as to what exactly the online portions of each games contains. If you want to contribute, as some have asked since I've started, then contact me in the Official #GBATemp.net IRC Channel for details. Please understand that help is needed for the more obscure games, not the popular titles, such as Clubhouse Games or Tetris DS.

The objective in Days of Ruin is for the player to defeat the enemy army with their own army. Except for certain single player missions with special objectives, there are two ways to defeat an opponent: destroy all of the enemy's units or capture their headquarters. The battle system is turn-based. Two to four armies, each headed by a commanding officer (CO), take turns building and commanding units on grid-based maps. Every turn, units, which consist of ground, sea and air units, can move across the different types of terrain and attack enemy units or perform other actions, such as submerging a submarine or resupplying friendly units. Fog of War, a phenomenon that prevents players from seeing enemy units other than those in the visual range of their units; various weather conditions which change the terrain effects of the entire map; CO powers; and many other factors can affect the battle.

Upon connection online, the player can choose between a match with a random opponent from around the world, or a match with someone that the player has exchanged Friend Codes with. Worldwide matches are limited to two players, with the weather conditions being randomly generated and a map randomly chosen from a set list. Worldwide match players can choose, if they want an opponent close to their skill level or to play against an opponent regardless of skill level. When playing with a friend, more options are opened up to allow greater customization of the match, such as the type of weather and the duration of the match. Voice chat is only supported when playing with a friend, and is unavailable during worldwide online play.

This is a portable bowling game for the Nintendo DS whose main competition is the bowling mini-game from Clubhouse Games. Upon starting the game you've got the option of Quick Play, Single Player and Multiplayer. As you would expect, Quick Play lets you get straight into the game, picking a character and a lane, with a choice of twelve characters and lanes available overall, although only two of each are unlocked to begin with. Pinbusters scores just like traditional bowling over ten frames, with splits and strikes giving you bonus points.

Players can choose to face off in one-on-one games versus both worldwide and friendly players. Unlike Clubhouse Games, all controls are done with with the control pad and buttons. Players choose the characters available to them which must be first unlocked via Single Player. Next, a player is randomly chosen to choose the lane. Like characters, lane too must be unlocked beforehand. If you own an Action Replay, then these are not an issue. Finally, the game begins, and ten frames of play commence. One interesting feature is the Psyche ability which allows players to create extra bowling pins upon the lane of their opponents, adding further difficulty.

The main objective of Animal Crossing: Wild World is to pay the mortgage of the player's house to Tom Nook, a shop owner. After the first loan is paid, future loans increase as the player upgrades their house. While paying the debt of their home, the player can engage in a variety of tasks, such as interacting with villagers, planting flowers and collecting items such as furniture, clothes and fish. Animal Crossing: Wild World is non-linear and does not require the player to pay off their mortgage at all. Unlike the previous game, all of the player's characters share the same house and work together to pay off the mortgage, instead of each having their own house.

Animal Crossing: Wild World's Wi-Fi capabilities allow players to visit other players' villages no matter where they are in the world, assuming that access to a compatible wireless access point is available and that they are using a version of the game with a compatible language. For example, the Oceania and North America versions can connect locally and via Wi-Fi, but they cannot connect to a version from Japan due to a difference in character encoding. Up to four players can be in an Animal Crossing: Wild World town both via local wireless or through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Connection to random players is not possible, as connection is made by the mutual entry of Friend Codes. The only random Wi-Fi interaction that is possible between players is through the character named Blanca, who is a cat that players can draw a face for, and share with random Wi-Fi users.

Arkanoid DS is a simple but highly addictive game first released in the mid-80's. Every bit as popular as the legendary Space Invaders, Arkanoid returns to the Nintendo DS boasting a huge range of enhancements with take its gameplay to new levels. Now everyone can enjoy the game thank to a range of approachable game modes, such as Easy Rules, Seeing the Game and Enthusiasm Level. Piloting a space vessel, called a "Vaus," your objective is to drive an energy ball back and forth in order to destroy the blocks which appear in a variety of patterns above you.

Arkanoid DS supports online play for up to four people (using Friend Codes or random matchmaking) in two different modes. Bust All mode is a race to see who can clear a level first. Bust Color mode is a race to see who can destroy all of the blocks of a specified color. The levels that you play on are randomly selected from all that the game has to offer, and you can keep an eye on your opponents while playing via small thumbnail images that appear alongside your own play area. Multiplayer games play out in the same way that single-player games do, except that any negative power-ups (power-downs, if you prefer) that you collect are passed on to your opponents. Shrinking other players' bats and slowing their balls are perhaps the most obvious ways to upset them, but multiplayer-specific pickups, such as one that randomly drops a handful of additional blocks on opponents' screens, are also worth pursuing.

After unidentified beings known as "Blanks" start popping up, they are soon followed by a Soul Reaper named Senna who makes them disappear. Puzzled by these unknown beings and the even more mysterious girl, Ichigo and Rukia set out to learn more, but uncover an evil plot when a menacing clan tries to kidnap Senna. Banished from the Soul Society long ago, the clan's leader is sending the World of the Living and the Soul Society on a collision course, and Senna seems to be the key to his diabolical plot for revenge. Can Ichigo and his fellow Soul Reapers save the two worlds from annihilation?

The online sessions play better versus its prequel, Bleach: The Blade of Fate. You can connect to Wi-Fi with your specified name and even a self-made icon. You can send messages to those on your Friend Code list via a simple text system, play ranked matches and watch yourself move up once again on an online ranking system. Jump into battles with either friends or random players at any time. This time, there is a much less lag. On occasion, you will get a sluggish fight, but this is a person-to-person connection issue. Ultimately, it is a much superior experience than last time. I would personally recommend Dark Souls over its predecessor due to the improved online performance, a larger character selection and various enhancements in the game mechanics.

Unlike the primary Mario Party titles where the player(s) explore a Monopoly-style board, Bomberman Land Touch! has the player exploring an overworld, freely exploring as much of the area as has been unlocked. If you played the first game, Bomberman Land Touch! 2 really doesn't try to be anything more than "Bomberman Land Touch! Again." The characters from the original are back with a brand new story and a new adventure that marches through the established Bomberman Land universe, and utilizes the same exact engine and many of the visuals that the team created for Bomberman Land Touch! The experience is a little different due to the new plot and puzzles, as well as a good amount of mini-games to complete. Some challenges, like the Soccer Kick where you flick the ball through three Bomberman goaltenders with the stylus, or the stone-skipping challenge that's not unlike those Flash Yeti game downloads. But then you're faced with the shameless recycling of some mini-games from the original game that reminds you that this sequel isn't fully original. Fortunately, if you never played the first game, you may find this to be a rewarding experience.

As for Bomberman Story DS, the Justice Department needs your help! Join Cheerful White as he searches throughout the Bomberman worlds in search of scientific data stolen from the organisation known only as “The Justice Department”. Along the way you meet a cast of crazy characters, making friends and meeting enemies in this all-action RPG. With all new color bombs at your disposal, Bomberman Story DS is the most action-packed Bomberman yet!

As for the online play, like Bomberman Land! Touch, you can play a retouched version of the original Bomberman with 8 characters, containing 1-4 human participants along with 4-7 computer opponents. Hudson Soft claimed that they had planned for the Battle Pack to work universally with future releases of Bomberman games that included it, similar to what Nintendo did with Mario Bros. within its Super Mario Advance series on Game Boy Advance. Instead, "Bomberman Battle Pack 2," available in both Bomberman Land! Touch 2 & Bomberman Story DS, offers new power-ups and new maps on top of the same Multiplayer present in the original in the original. So, while you can play the same multiplayer game, you cannot use the original Bomberman Land! Touch with owners of these two games. If you are choosing between the Bomberman games, Land! Touch 2 and Story DS offer compatible and classic fun with the little bomber. These are the versions to choose.

Civilization Revolution is a turn based strategy game in which the player can take one of 16 different civilizations, each with special abilities, from prehistory to modern times and the near future. In past installments, the player had more control over the rules of the game and often the game could last for more than ten hours. In Civilization Revolution the games for the most part can be finished within three hours. For the console version, the gameplay has been streamlined and simplified to make the game easier to play for newcomers to the series.

Online play is smooth and moves at a reasonable pace when playing over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. A bit of warning to share, is it's likely your opponents will drop out after their early bid for a domination victory fails. Similar to Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, the length of the games can stretch quite long compared to other games. Be sure you play with trusted, reliable friends. Up to four players can compete on one map, but it is hard to develop alliances and conspire against foes within the limited diplomacy communication options, so free-for-all is generally the order of the day.

Beyond the story mode, the game includes a battle mode containing 20 different competitive minigames. They're similar to the ones you'll find in the story mode, except that you share screen real estate with as many as three other opponents. Up to four players can compete in a limited set of minigames and compete in the full range. Unfortunately, there aren't many people playing the game online, so you'll really have to be patient or badger your friends to find opponents. You can head online where six people can race each other via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Online racing is reputably smooth. Even if you don't have any friend codes, you can still race online, which is nice for those people who find the whole friend-code system tedious. The experience isn't without problems, however. There's no way to communicate with other players, so it's hard to coordinate matches with friends. Something that may be a detriment to the online experience is that the game awards one point to the person who finishes first and no points to anyone else. You also don't appear to get penalized when you drop from a race, so it's not unreasonable to expect a lot of people quitting midrace when they realize they aren't going to win. The other issue is that you must first unlock characters and other selections in the single-player game beforehand in order to use them online (unless you use Action Replay to take care of that for you). It's the best toonish alternative to Mario Kart DS.

Fit the world in your pocket as you race opponents on legendary circuits and iconic city streets across three continents. Offering only the most impressive cars, GRID enables you to experience what it’s like to race the streets of Milan in an Aston Martin or Pagani Zonda. Test your competitive edge on the hilly streets of San Francisco and compete in a vicious drift-battle in neon lit Tokyo.

If you're more of a Gran Turismo fan versus toon kart racing, then this may be the racing game for you. You can take on random players or friends for some four-player fun. An interesting feature here is that after racing random drivers, you can add them to your friends or rivals list. This makes handling your Friend Codes a little less tedious. While the controls aren't exactly like Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer (complaints about drifting seem apparently), this arcade/sim hybrid racer still offers a lot of fun. The developer, Firebrand Games, whom also made Race Driver: Create and Race, and they brought the same custom track creator and the ability to share your tracks with your friends. Give it a shot, racing fans. You just might be impressed.

Koopa Shells will be flying world-wide with the release Mario Kart DS. The acclaimed Mario Kart series is going wireless, letting you race and battle with an all-star cast that includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Bowser, and Toad! With over 30 courses and all the crazy items and frantic speed players would expect, this game is a Mario Kart fan’s dream!

This is the very first Wi-Fi Connection game, and Nintendo came out swinging for the fences. Participants compete in four races. Racers who drop out (and will happen often) will give those still racing points, but it's still frustrating to experience. While you get to speed down the runways in the traditional game, there is No Battle Mode or Time Trial ghost data trading. 20 of the 32 total tracks are playable. The biggest gripe is the skill, known as "snaking." This allows players possessing the ability to move a greater speeds than novices. It's not a perfect online experience, but it's not a bad one. Just be sure to play with trusted players via Friend Codes and agree on a snaking rule.

Cars can be torn apart using truly advanced and comprehensive damage capturing technology. To further amplify the realism, crash repercussions such as smoke, dirt spray and dust clouds can affect all racers on the track. Packed with features that will amp the spirit of competition and create for the ultimate showdown between you and your friends. For the first time ever, see the impact of the Autosculpt technology on performance all in real time. Sculpt your cars inside a wind tunnel and choose from hundreds of real-world, aftermarket parts to build your ultimate battle machine.

NFS fans likely know about this, but for the rest of you, you may be missing out on one of the best online racers from an established series. Choose to play with friends or anyone. Participants can even use their own customized cards, but even novices can step up and race against the veterans. The graphics are smooth yet can be glitchy at times, as reports are that with all 4 cars on screen, jumping visuals may occur. Considered a cross between Pac-Man and Katamari Damacy, this is a fast, fun styled distraction. While it won't engross players for more than a short time, that is the goal of most DS games. So, I'd consider this an accomplished mission. Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground pushes the limits of Wi-Fi on the DS with 4-Player Local and Wifi Multiplayer. Create your own custom skater, or choose from dozens of unique skaters. Let out your artistic side by using the graphical editor to create custom outfits, board graphics, and logos.

Why is this the only Tony Hawk DS game listed? Simple: It's the absolute best! Thanks to the development tools from Downhill Jam, Vicarious gets four players going in Proving Ground as well as the excellent, albeit hindered, voice chat engine. You will need Friend Codes in order to speak to them while connected. In addition, you can download and upload custom art along with accessing the leader boards. To do this, you must first register at the official website. American Sk8land began online play well. Downhill Jam pushed the limits of the player count. Proving Ground, while not so innovative in the single-player portion, is the best online skating game hands down on the Nintendo DS.

From the classic arcade crowd to the die-hard Kombat fans alike, this is a great offering for online play. You can play both games versus friends or random opponents. For UMK3, the moves are on screen, so even a novice can jump right in. Even Puzzle Kombat offers a nice gift towards online play, but unless you were a fan of it, you'll likely find yourself wanting a different puzzle game. You will want to unlock the hidden characters beforehand either by your own skill or use of cheat codes to get a little more out of the experience. I cannot stress the following point enough. Highly addictive wordplay: Use sets of lettered tiles to create words, clearing the board as you use tiles. Take on friends via Local Wireless, or battle WordJong players around the world via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

You could also throw in Transformers: Autobots/Decepticons,Custom Beat Battle: Draglade 1 & 2, Diddy Kong Racing DS, Geometry Wars: Galaxies, New International Track & Field and Surf's Up.

If japanese games are allow then you could also include Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary, Power Pro Kun no DS series, Itadaki Street DS and Mawashite Tsunageru Touch Panic.
