Anbernic reveals the RG35XXSP, a GBA SP-inspired retro handheld

Retro handheld manufacturer Anbernic has revealed its first clamshell device: the Anbernic RG35XXSP. As the suffix indicates, this handheld's design is inspired by the GBA SP but it should be capable of playing more than just GBA games. While full specs of the device have yet to be revealed, the naming convention indicates that it will likely be another RG35XX device, just in another form factor. This means packing the quad-core H700 chip and the company has confirmed that the device will support HDMI connection, Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi connectivity.

No availability or pricing for the Anbernic RG35XXSP have been announced but we should expect the company to provide more details in the coming weeks.

I agree w everyone about the flood of the emulation devices. I'm usually put off by them because they have seemed like cheap junk for a long time, but this one is at least novel enough to compel me to pick it up... I have been wanting a device that is good for waiting in lines and idle play etc... This one seems awesome! I still have a ds lite and a 3DS, but I have always missed the feel of the SP from back in the day since it is what I put the most time into. It is nice to have a device which brings forward that DS Lite style sleep which wasn't supported on GBA games, and getting support up to PS1 is exciting because this seems like it will make for a really good way to play a lot of RPGs from that era that I missed.

Taki Udon on Twitter is actually working on a MiSTer-based handheld. Well, two actually... Vertical and horizontal orientations, respectively... But I'm over software emulator handhelds... I'm either in the camp of original hardware+mods (Like IPS screens and audio amps), or I'm in the FPGA camp. I'm even going to upgrade my bartop to a cheap MiSTer setup, once Taki Udon's $115 clone boards are ready. And that's WITH the 128MB SDRAM.
Been following Taki's YT channel for the past 2-3 yrs and I'm waiting on the release of his Cyclone FPGa clone SoC as well. The main reason I held off venturing into FPGa emulation is due to its current cost of entry. Due to all the hype surrounding the MiSTer Project, inventory on the Intel Cyclone FPGa's have been scarce causing there to be artificial demand, resulting in resellers scalping them and hiking prices.

GBA SP did have a better, backlit screen AGS 1 or something? It ain't cheap now.

Still, I prefer the original form factor of the GBA.

Agree but only because now it's possible to upgrade the original GBA's screen. In their stock/original condition, AGS-101 SP is definitely best. But the SP's shoulder buttons are much less durable than the OG GBA's.

As for these Anbernic/Ayaneo emu handhelds, I'll buy one when they have Gamecube handled 100%. Not before.

If I can find my old GBA SP charger, I think I'll just slap an EverDrive into it rather than buy this. Why own an AGS101 just to sit pretty on a shelf? I really do like the concept, though.

Everdrive GBA mini is very nice, @Chary. Not a lot of bling features, but it just works.
