Here's an ASH file compressor (mostly used for the Wii Menu, however can be found in random DOLs, Animal Crossing: City Folk DLC and My Pokémon Ranch) given to me a while back by a user named conanac. This was originally to be used to make Animal Crossing: City Folk DLC. It was never formally released until now.
I don't know how this actually works as the source code for it seems to be lost, but it compresses into an .lzp and .lzd, and then a .hfp and .lzd (a data and dictionary file).
This tool works best if you drag and drop files to it.
NOTE: This is a Windows program. Being a native Mac user, I can say this works fine under Wine.
