The title says it all. I’m struggling to turn on my 3DS as it crashes with and without the SD card. And it keeps saying it’s an issue with the menu app so when I changed the settings in Luma’s menu to automatically go to the homebrew browser and it was able to launch but when I tried to go the the menu it crashes again!

I have linked an image of the error screen I receive. It worked a couple hours ago and but for some reason when I closed the screen for a few seconds and reopened it a little later it was frozen in a black screen so I had to force shut it down. I haven’t added anything to it recently so I don’t know what has happened and why the menu seems to be corrupted!

Currently I have no access to opening up the SD card on a computer but it won’t even open with it removed!

Can you access Luma3DS menu or GodMode9 at all? With or without the sdcard?
This sounds like a hardware issue. You could try checking the sd for errors with h2testw, then doing a ctrtransfer if you can still access GodMode9, otherwise you might need to replace the sd card reader..

I am able to access both with and without the as card, but it refuses to launch even with it removed. It seems to me like the menu is broken because when I booted into the homebrew app after changing luma settings, it successfully booted, but I still can’t to the menu without crashing.

That's a good sign.

What homebrew app?
but I still can’t to the menu without crashing.
Did you test the sd card?
If you did, you can try booting into the recovery mode with the button combo, and update the firmware from there. If it crashes or freezes, then i suggest doing a ctrtransfer.

The home brew app I’m talking about is the one you install that can open .3dsx files. Also what button combo? Because I’m fairly certain the SD card isn’t broken when it’s the same issue without it. However I will try to see test it, but in the meantime what do you want me to try to do if it is fine, in case testing the card take’s awhile?

The recovery mode (also known as Safe Mode Boot) can be accessed when turning on the Nintendo 3DS while holding A+R+L+Up(DPad) then simply update the system from there and it should hopefully fix your problem.

*The Homebrew Launcher.

Hold A+R+L+(up) on the dpad on boot.

It could be the sd card reader. But you can't know for sure until you try the available software methods first, then you could assume that if all fail to fix it..

CTRTransfer. But only if it passes the test. Otherwise you'd need to get a new replacement sd card in order to do the CTRTransfer..

Yep I can access that! I’m updating now hopefully.
Oh crap. It happened again, it told me it was up to date and when I rebooted it crashed

If that didn't help then you should try ctrtransfer.
Also check the sdcard if you haven't already (before doing a ctrtransfer).

Hi, it’s been a while but I got a hold of something that has an sd card reader and I tried to do a ctrtransfer but it has failed once again. Is there anything I can do? And no, the sd card does not appear to be the issue as it still crashes without its sd card, and even an sd card from another 3ds that functions.
what can I do? I really think it’s hardware related

at the bottom of the crttransfer guide it says something about deleting system save data. But I really want to avoid that as I have things in the system I really want to preserve

Oh no it isn’t an error like before, before it just failed to load the menu and I was stuck on the homebrew launcher. Now I can’t even get to the homebrew launcher at all!

Ever since that ctrtransfer a larger issue of not even being able to boot what so ever has occured. I did get the right ctrtransfer thing as I have a EU model and I downloaded the EU version. I can still access godmode and luma settings but nothing else is accessible due to another thing breaking

I was talking about the 3ds's sd card reader, and not the kind of sd card adapter that you plug into your pc (to transfer files etc). Unless you bought a (3ds) sd card reader replacement?
and I tried to do a ctrtransfer but it has failed once again.
It failed? What error did it give you? Did GodMode9 crash, freeze or glitched when "it failed" to complete the ctrtransfer?

Maybe it is hardware related, but you still need to make sure the sdcard is not to blame first, and if it is faulty it might explain why the ctrtransfer failed..

Yes, you can't use your old "Nintendo 3ds folder" (the one that contains your installed games & saves) after doing the ctrtransfer, so backup that folder along with some essential system files that are mentioned here in this thread (in order to decrypt your saves later, since Checkpoint is unaccessible for you now). As for your installed games you can dump them with GodMode9.
Ever since that ctrtransfer a larger issue of not even being able to boot what so ever has occured.
So the ctrtransfer process was completed successfully? And by "failed" you meant it won't allow you to boot into the home menu?

So I think I had successfully completed a ctr transfer but the problem just got worse as I am no longer able to even complete a boot, can’t even access homebrew launcher I’m now stuck with gm9 and luma Settings. Also with the sd card reader are you saying i might need to replace it? Cause I don’t have the tools i would need to do that, or the knowledge. But I will try to dump all data if possible. But is it possible to recover data from system apps, (mii’s) as I don’t have any of them on my original console and they have personal meaning

If that doesn’t work is it possible to transfer the save data from tomodachi life (I converted my card version into an cia)into a factory reset version of my 3ds? As that has basically all the miis I need to save.
If I can I would be willing to do that instead if I just straight up can’t save the 3ds with the only way being factory resetting the 3ds and re adding the things I want to preserve

it’s not only the miis I want to save, like save data on games and not necessarily badges though but it would be nice to be able to recover them.

Also I have a spare 3ds that I can use to be a donator if I need to transfer any parts across

Shoot! I didn’t see that in the guide and didn’t think to do that, all I have is a nand dump from before I modded it. But it has crap all on it
Post automatically merged:

Would it make much of a difference if I do a nand dump right now to access the data?
Try it and see what happens.

Looking at the guide it shouldn't be affected, but who knows.

No I followed the guide and it didn’t mention anything about backing up the nand before a ctr transfer. But I got the nand backup so what should I do with it? Because I don’t mind if I just reset the ds if there is nothing I can do to repair it, but I want to be able to recover some of it.

I can’t access that. But how am I supposed to fix it with that? Do I need to replace the home menu app? Because I have no idea on how to do that.

ok turns out the link had extra parts added but what do I do with this titleid?
