i think ive completed the downgrade, it says reboot in 10 secs, after rebooting. im stuck with blackscreen again

Do i turn it off and do this step?

  1. Navigate to /Nintendo 3DS/(32 Character ID)/(32 Character ID)/extdata/00000000/ on your SD card
    • EUR Region: Delete 00000098
    • JPN Region: Delete 00000082
    • USA Region: Delete 0000008f
    • KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
    • TWN Region: Delete 000000B1
  2. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS and boot
Yes, turn it off, and do the step.

If I restored my a9lh system back to factory settings and sent it back to Nintendo would they be able to tell if the system was ever modded in the past?

I've got a brand new 2DS that came with version 6.0 how do I downgrade to install a9lh? Do I have to install homebrew and menuhax first?

There's only two ways. Either second, hacked 3ds. Or hardmod. Pick one or no downgrade :-p

So it says to put the decrypt9 files in a new folder renamed to files9, open browser to one of the following links and will boot into decrypt9 so I'm assuming don't have to use the homebrew hax and install menuhax to install decrypt9 anymore?
Yes, you don't need homebrew for decrypt9.

You shouldn't be booting into decrypt9 through the browser, that's for lower firmwares. If you want decrypt9 to show up in the hb menu then you have to copy the decrypt9 folder (that contains the .3dsx file and .smdh file) into your 3ds folder.

So I have 6 SD cards of various sizes. 3 of them will not work to boot my brother in laws 2DS and 3 of them won't. Is this a known issue hardware or software wise? It feels kind of sketchy now relying on the SD card slot to prevent the system from being a brick.

So I had this 2DS booting A9Lhax with a 4 GB card. He says his pokemon games he downloaded with ciangel are messing up and not letting him attack. He said it was Y and alphasaphire. He beat X recently so I think he can tell if the game is bugging out and becoming unplayable.

Is there any kind of compatibility issues or is this maybe a symptom of wonky SD card problems again?

Why use flashcarts for 3ds when you can get arm9loaderhax? Though, you do need a ds flashcart to play ds gsmes, so for the cheapest option, go with the r4i sdhc gold pro. For maximum options, I recommend either the dstwo or dstwo plus.

3DS -> not necessary! just start here for a full softmod: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

DS -> with custom firmware (that you'd set up above) you can use a cheap flash cart like the DSTT.

I read thought the instructions for the cfw and it looks pretty confusing so was going to give it a miss and just pick up a card but everyone keeps telling me it's the best option so I might give it a chance. Once I have the cfw running what program is used to download the 3ds games? Also is it just a case of dropping the wood kernel file on the original r4 to get that running on the day 3ds?

it is the best option, it's easy, and it's free compared to 3DS flash carts which are expensive and give you less features.

depends which one you get. for the DSTT I mentioned, you can set up forwarders to have DS games on your home menu.
