nds-bootstrap loader: Run commercial NDS backups from an SD Card

nds-bootstrap:

Thanks to the work of ahezard, Gericom, Apache, Robz8, _catcatcat, and shutterbug2000 and other contributors, we can now load NDS games from the SD card, without any flashcard/SLOT-1 card.

Don't expect high compatibility, but do expect many, many updates.

if you could get acess to all the 3ds ram in twl mode it could be improved even more would not work on a dsi though

If you are referring to the FCRam (the main 3ds userspace ram, the same ram AGB_firm stores the rom in), that can be doable, but would require a patched TWL_Firm.

Nds-bootstrap loader is already picky with its installation, adding a requirement for a specific patch to twl_firm will only further this issue.
That said though, there is a massive amount of FCRam in comparison to ram available to the dsi. If nds-bootstrap goes for this route there will be a lot more space to cache the rom.

Out of curiosity, can the devs make a statement of what will probably never be possible with this implementation?

Like, games will never reach 100% 1:1 DS speed, or game XYZ will probably never work etc.

Or are is there confidence that this can mimic the NDS lke 100% in all regards?
Well, I was pessimistic in the past, thinking that bootstrap reached its maximum evolution with wram cache...
But seeing all the progress made since the last month, I think that someday it will replace flashcards for NTR games (ds games)
Maybe Dsi games won't ever work, but there is still a lot to do, and I think we are in very good hands ;)

Last commit test:
Ace Attorney 1 - Works, loadings not often.
English of the Dead - Same. Maybe little faster.
CoD4 - Same.
Castlevania Aria of Sorow - Broken. Weird sound bug.
Resident Evil DS - Finally no loadings ingame! Only in cutscenes and laggy-CGI.
Sonic Rush - Aaaaaalmost like on real hardware.
Trauma Center - Workins. Loadings very shorts.

Sonic Chronicles, Sonic Colors, Solatorobo doesn't work yet. Rougue Agent working weird. 0_o

With the latest unofficial bootstrap, output set as on(debug) and mkds set as donor rom, Pokémon d/p in italian don't start. It's normal?

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM

  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm

i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
