You always get will be able to update to 3.0.0 if you are below it, so if you are just an end user, be patient :) by the time something worthwhile comes out you might be able to update for free.
Maybe not, but I'd rather wait until buying an game specifically to update, unless I need to.
I actually going to get Pokken DX for safety plus I'm a bit curious if it runs any better than the Wii U version. Since if I know the Internet right, (And I probably do) if this is a holy grail, Pokken DX will be scalped to shit and a reprint will have 3.0.1+ on it.

Probably the shadiest way of upgrading, but does GameStop still let you return preowned games for refunds within 7 days?

There is nothing to test at the moment for non devs.

Better stay on lowest firmware as long as possibile.

For devs not linked to big grups this is a very promising release, but still in a very early stage.

It's like the first HB for 3ds launched from mset esploit. Was a great chance to learn about the systen, but real homebrews come only with ctrulib and smea's HB launcher.

yeah hopefully, but the thing is the game pokken might get very pricy later on (scalpers).

i am also wondering if it really is a must to have 3.0.0 , is it now really absolutely necessary ?

if yes i rather order the pokken game now before the price goes up or something.

The only thing I care about is RetroArch for Switch. :P
So this might be a fantastic release to make this happen anytime in the future. Good work guys!
Same here, my friend!
I am hoping for that sweet Mupen64 Plus core to finally arrive to a Nintendo console :D
It should be right from the get go, since Switch is an ARM architecture device and Mupen64 has an ARM dynarec iirc.

This definitely seems like a step forward in the right direction :). Still I don't predict being able to do anything with homebrew within the next year even with an open source sdk available. Im not saying a channel might not appear within 12 months, I just cant see emulators and other utilities available within that time(it would certainly be a first). Mario on the other hand is less than a month away :P, to update or not to update............

You know, there is this thing called firmware spoofing, which lets you use games and access to the online services by spoofing to the latest firmware... You obviously might already know what it is, so dont forget it could be a thing for the people with a homebrewd switch just like it happened with the wii u and 3ds.

You won't be spoofing higher firmware without finding holes in said higher firmware first, extracting its encryptions et al, and then engineering a new firmware spoof. But then you risk getting your console unique SSL cert banned (if they detect, and they have ways to detect, spoofing), at which point...

Notice how daeken and others have regularly told you not to hope for any major development in higher firmwares, its because the holes to gain access as we have it now were fixed. We can't just fart out new firmware spoofs and by the time someone makes their way into higher order firmware, the firmware (and software compatibility sheets) will have moved.

I thought the eFuses stopped this being a thing on the switch?

Fuses are a hardware level (at boot) protection layer, they have no affect on a spoof that is done during runtime. They are problems because they limit the size of the scene drastically due to a lack of viable switches and no way to make more than what already exists.

What about the possibility of a cfw? Wouldnt it help with the updating thing while preserving entrypoints, patches, etc and making it possible to play newer games?

Same problem, you have no access to the game decryption as that is also changed with higher firmware, not just whether or not a cart will be read (or if you have access to the eShop, SSL bans would prevent the latter). So your system has no way to read the data/game. Anything past-3.0.1 will require higher-level compromises on higher firmwares whether that be for CFW or in a spoofed firmware.

And, again, there's nothing you can do about the SSL certs and if those get banned your console is never going online. With the steady transition, even from Nintendo, for GaaS model for gaming, this becomes a major stickler.

This is a wild guess, yet the only issue with that currently, is that "Pokken" will most likely get scalped with prices doubled and what not, since it's a 3.0 update title. Nintendo may also push out updated carts with a 3.01+ afterwards, creating more supply and demand for 3.0 update carts.

It could be a similar situation like Ninjhax (Cubic Ninja) but then it may turn out to be no problem at all. In all honesty, it's a 50/50 gamble imo, yet personally I don't want to waste money on a full priced title that i'll never play anyway after updating my console.

Waiting for a way to backup my zelda saves :D

Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk

Honestly, this is absolutely all I want to do right now lol. I really just bought the switch to play BotW. I'm a huge Zelda fan, having grown up playing the series, starting with Zelda for NES. However, I would like to buy a second switch so I can play Mario Kart 8 online and other new games that may be released. I have not done this because I have no way to transition my BotW savegame, that has 150+ hours of gameplay. When I can backup/restore my savegames I'm going to begin the hunt for another switch on 3.0 so I can use that one as my backup switch and start using my current switch as my primary/current firmware switch. Another thing that may be nice for some, is the ability to install a different version of a game. BotW below a certain version has the ability to access a 'glitch mode', it may be nice for some that have upgraded to be able to downgrade only the game itself to a previous version.
