Intellivision announces new casual-targeted console

Intellivision is finally ready to re-enter the console market with the Intellivision Amico. Named after the Italian word for friend, the Amico is a "really simple, fun party machine" focused on ease of use and couch multiplayer. Intellivision is not competing directly with industry titans like Sony or Microsoft, seeing itself as more complimentary to them, and instead is targeting non-gamers and children. The main feature of the Amico is its unique controller, which features a small touchscreen on the top half and a click wheel on the bottom half, that features 64 pressure-sensitive inputs (some other buttons can be seen on the side of the controller in the trailer, but they aren't referenced and likely aren't used for gameplay). Every game for the Amico will be designed around this controller, whether they're remakes of classic Atari and Intellivision titles or new titles designed specifically for the Amico. Some of the new titles demonstrated included an edutainment Sesame Street game, a few sports or board games, a game called Dolphin Quest that's being created by the original Ecco the Dolphin team, and a quick peek of the brand new Earthworm Jim title, also being created by its original team. In accordance with the focus on smaller titles, digital games will cost $9.99 or less, while physical titles will be $19.99 or less. Also, seemingly because of its younger target audience, controversial monetization tools like microtransactions and loot boxes will be strictly forbidden on the platform.

The Amico will be available on the 10th of October, 2021. The standard black and white options will retail for $249.99, while the woodgrain option will cost $279.99.

I honestly don’t know what to say. RIP? I see many companies getting involved in video game market and it’s scaring the s*** out of me. I fear another video game market crash similar to 1983. Anyways, who knows! Let’s watch and see :D

They fucking came up with a woodgrain option? As if this thing wasn't going to be a big enough piece of shit before. Don't get me wrong, I love to get my retro on, but those controllers? I'll take real buttons, thank you kindly. They still won't say which snapdragon it's going to use (there's no way it's going to be higher than something like a SD 626). It'll be an interesting curiosity once they clearance them for $30.

As someone who has spent time playing an original Intellivision, those controls were terrible.

I don’t want to completely discount this, given there are same talented game designers involved and they are doing some things Nintendo makes more difficult (digital game sharing). That said, Nintendo already targets this market, is in the same price range, and has all the first party properties. A casual user isn’t going to buy one of these instead of a Switch because of a new Earthworm Jim game.

$250 USD?
There is ambition and then there is that.
I would have said $100 is already pushing the pricey toy/gadget budget to "nah" for most people, especially when you can get a kindle fire or something for way less than that.
Having a push with some games is certainly a better foot forward than most I have seen (including every android gaming focused device so far) but I can't see them sustaining it.
As far as casuals/non gamers and then proclaiming Earthworm Jim and Ecco as titles... I guess I will write that off as hedging their bets. Intellivision as a brand... I think Atari and Commodore are worth more at this point even with their history in the years since then.

I think I will be joining vincentx77 in grabbing one on clearance for the shelf of failures and oddities, and maybe hacking it to do something with that controller and what might be a nice screen if that is not contrast pumped to look fancy for the press photos. In my case I am thinking that would make a nice alternative to various CNC hand controllers/MPG*, especially if they do make something worth $250 and designed to stand up to kids using it as a chew toy.

*video because why not.

What the hell? Intellivision is back again?
Who did revive the company and why?

Also... yeah, the console's name, "Amico", is my language. Wonder why they chose to name it so.

this is giving me Zeebo feelings LOL (who remembers this one?)
why would i buy this since we already have mobile casual games?
this looks like something that i would play once and see how outdated it is and just get back to mobile games (which are free)
