Citra 3DS emulator is also shutting down development, GitHub repo taken down

emu.png

Quietly following on the heels of the injunction ruling against Yuzu emulator that resulted in its removal and ceased development, popular Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra is following suit. Yuzu's parent company, Tropic Haze LLC, is also the owner of the development team for Citra 3DS emulator, and because of the recent ruling, Citra has also met the same fate. As of current writing, Citra has been removed from download on its official website, and the Citra GitHub repository has been taken down as well.

An official statement from Bunnei, a representative for both Citra and Yuzu, was posted on the Discord channel for Yuzu, saying that they never intended to allow piracy to impact Nintendo, and that playing games on "unauthorized hardware" is harmful, so development on both emulators will cease as of today. Citra's Discord server has also locked itself down, following the announcement.

This is the worst thing I've seen all day. My parents broke my 3DS because I was being impatient on Wii WADs and wanted to take my 3ds to my car the other day and it led to my parents breaking my 3DS. I'm so mad right now. Here's the story:

To be honest this feels like an even bigger blow than Yuzu closing down, given the fact this is the 3DS emulator for a very large majority of us.

Alternatives exist, at least, but it will take a long while for them to reach the same heights as Citra did.

Salutations to the Citra team. You did well.

Now all make sense why they targeted Yuzu because they can strike 3DS emulator along with it, not because of patreon BS.
Exactly. They always want to hit the hardest whenever they file a lawsuit. Taking down yuzu would also take down Citra.

Nintendo does NOT want people to continue to use anything 3DS and instead force us to purchase a $70 remake on the switch.

I wonder if anyone have made the backups of the latest versions that were released?

In the case of a open source project using git, I'd always expect to see at least some archive somewhere.

Same thing happened with Portal 64.

Of course, the biggest concern now will be active development, anyone working on this project would basically have a target on their back.

Bummer, I hoped Yuzu developers would fight all way to US Supreme Court to have their judges to issue the ruling on emulators.

Nintendo's attack on emulators could lead to severe consequence, such as dangerous cyberattack on all of Nintendo's infrastructure like happened to Sony in 2011.

wait some time. i bet forks of those emulators will pop up in the future. until then, there is plenty of games that run 99.9% on citra already. no more updates (FOR NOW) i know but, at least, all the games that already run great will run with the stagnated last version. what ikm curious is what this case will have on other emulators

Thank goodness, if there wasn't at least an archive I don't know what we would've done.
Hopefully someone will fork it and pick up development.
And get fucked by Nintendo too? I highly doubt anyone with a brain would do it. One way or another they will have to start over with a different name (not sure if "Yuzu" and "Citra" are trademarked) and codebase.

They settled, the case is done. Unfortunately, Nintendo got what they actually wanted
