If you are looking to hack it, I suggest asking on the Nintendon't thread to see if you can still run GameCube games that way. I attempted to look it up on Google but got no results
I would like to hack and I believe it will play GameCube ROMs thru Nintendont. Gamecube is my favorite controller type, but maybe I can get it to work over USB with the adapter I use with PC.
Using the WiiU USB adapter or its clones will work perfectly fine for Nintendont, for both non Backwards Compatible Wii and WiiU consoles.
Handling USB for both storage and controller may be a little tricky but it's definitely possible.
That's great to know, thanks. I can soon get the rest of my Nintendo collection from storage and find out if I have a Nintendo brand with analog shoulders or a knockoff without, because I don't remember. Regardless it seems I will have at least one mostly good option
you can even use the wii remote and nunchuck to play GC on nintendont - although of course that is not the best experience with how many buttons you are lacking
It just occured to me classic controller plugs into wiimote-- where the nunchuck would go, probably? I doubt I would prefer it to GC, but if stored GC controller is good and first party, I might try. I have no wiimote, hope to come across one working as cheap junk, I don't like them nor need it to be great.
I don't remember if I saw in a video (or read somewhere) that, "GameCube incompatible Wii's" are literally Wii's without the ports... as the board still has the sockets to attach/regain port connectivity.
Either way, a Classic Controller is still a good option. Rechargeable batteries are not that expensive, recently acquired Duracell ones and the "low battery" lasts 8+ hours.
I dunno about that; I wouldn't spend $7 on a motion-control-gimmick-only console, myself. I'd consider that a complete waste of money, as I've had extremely negative experiences with that gimmick. It needs to have GameCube compatibility to be worth anything.
@JuanBaNaNa There are a few unpopulated points on the board of RVL-101 besides the missing actual ports, but yes: Full functionality can be restored. Needs quite a bit of equipment: Preheather, hot air station, dead motherboard from RVL-001 (makes no sense removing stuff from a good one). Hard to desolder the ports
Big N just wanted to save a few ct on each unit late in the Wii's lifespan so they…
…removed what they could (ports, a few electronic components, mechanical parts for centering 8cm discs in the slot-in drive) without even adjusting the software: It shows GC data management and a GC disc in Disc Channel. No idea about the drive firmware. I found no information about the question if the drive will play GC discs if manually inserted and centered. However, the RVL-101 will boot GC games with old drive.
@AkiraKurusu
The Wii makes an excellent fast+easy emulation device – even the newer models. I fail seeing a waste of money considering a price of $7, even if hating all native Wii software with passion (and there are quite a few good titles in my opinion).
@KleinesSinchen I caught a YT video of someone replacing the optical drive from an older Wii, it seems a Wii like mine will read the disk if it's equipped mechanically to grab miniDVD. I'd go straight to nintendont myself but would be interested to know if GC roms can be put on full sized disc (I know the GC repro discs on miniDVD require special effort but can be done) and run that way
I know you didn't asked me, but why would you spend resources in discs when Nintendont works fine with GCN isos in SD and USB?
Not judging though.
As far as I know, the Wii Mini is the only board revision that has GCN compatibility removed altogether, so Wii Family Edition (without GCN ports) are in reality regular Wiis without GCN ports.
"I know the GC repro discs on miniDVD require special effort but can be done"
Really? How?? If you know a way of burning self-booting discs for GC, PLEASE share it!
He was so d*mn close but had to give up at the end.
The Datel discs are made with professional equipment (mastering, pressing) and they succeeded in producing the protection of PS1, PS2(!) and GC/Wii. Console disc protections are nearly(?) unbeatable with end user stuff, since consoles can evaluate things a PC drive can't. If the PC can't get certain data, how should it replicate that data?
@KleinesSinchen that's a really interesting link, I honestly don't understand some of it. My understanding was of two methods. An unauthorized GC disk of cheat codes was reverse-engineered to learn how to disarm GC copy protection, but those disks were difficult to produce and require special lasers. Also, a hard mod, which allowed GC to boot any miniDVD.
@K3Nv2 I got some cheapies at wallys, that are pretty good, already have lost a few expensive ones (one falls out and gone, can't find) while cutting grass so bought some cheap ones, and of course never lose these cheap ones. (Cheap meaning only $35, compared to air buds which I only have 1 of 2 now)
Crazy, the rich get away with this shit, and I can't shit without the poop police checking my asshole every time I shit, or if i have my toilet seatbelt on.
