How would that even work? Xbox is American, and Nintendo's Japanese - not to mention Nintendo's no small company Microsoft can just absorb.

If they acquire Nintendo, that then leaves two - Microsoft and Sony, except unbalanced because MS is larger/has more cash than Sony. That could then become a monopoly, if Sony's also bought out.

Yeah, no, a dichotomy is already bad enough - leave Nintendo alone. They, unlike Xbox, try to be different.

I like how different Nintendo is from them. I want Nintendo to just be NIntendo. Yeah their systems are low in specs compared to the two, but they're still making great games.

That's always been Nintendo's philosophy - try to wrangle something new from older tech. The Wii certainly wasn't as powerful as the 360 or PS3, but the Wiimote (as much as I personally hate it) made it stand out, made it popular amongst casuals.
The DS was weaker than the PSP, but still massively outsold Sony's device. Heck, even the Game Boy beat out the Game Gear and Atari Lynx.

Not to mention how the NES helped bring us back from the Crash, all that time ago.
If Nintendo were to be bought out by Microsoft, then this uniqueness would all but vanish, and that'd be detrimental for everyone - you need an outlier, someone bucking the current trend, being creative, else you'll all become stale.

I didn't know that the lower hardware business was since the beginning of Nintendo! I always thought that they started doing that busines since the GameCube. I can understand how people dislike the Wiimote, but I believe that it's the strongest earliest form of motion sensing technology and it was deifnitely groundbreaking for it's time. The DS, too, was also special.

If people were to try replicating the DS, it would never be the same as that one. Nintendo even got as to make a bunch of fantastic spinoffs for their main IPs on there and as far as I know, most of them received positive feedback.

Yeah, the Game Boy won because the monochrome screen didn't guzzle batteries, and was cheaper than colour screens, unlike the Lynx and Game Gear. Also Tetris helped sell the Game Boy, as did the much larger GB library and eventually Pokémon.
Despite being technologically inferior, it was the better battery life, the cheaper cost, and the superior library that allowed the GB to win.

Not all of Nintendo's consoles were winners (Virtual Boy, Wii U), but even with those Nintendo was experimenting, trying to see what the next popular gimmick would be - instead of just relying on more powerful hardware alone. I can respect them for that, even if the Wii replaced traditional controls with Wiimote waggle; we need that ingenuity, that out-of-the-box thinking.

It makes me wish and wonder what NIntendo is going to cook next with their new console. If they aren't thinking about new and groundbreaking ideas, I hope that they're able to go back into the console market, making games that the other systems are doing, while also making a new system that is like the DS lineup.

I know people want a Switch 2 badly, but I have a strong feeling that it's not going to happen, but rather, something else that's probably going to be a lot better than just a revisioned Switch.

Personally, I don't really care if it's a "Switch 2" or something different; I'd like backwards-compatibility, for one thing, but the Switch itself lacked that and I still generally like it. As long as the gimmick is functional, and doesn't replace traditional controls, I can adapt to it.

Oh my gosh, I remembered when every console back then had backwards-compatibility. They don't do that anymore, and it would be LOVELY if the new console were to have that to the Switch. It'll make the console even better since the Switch is one of the best selling consoles, I think?

Honestly, the document in question states something that I doubt would be easy to pull off. Already they're getting so much resistance with the Activision Blizzard acquisition, something I'm sure they didn't foresee at the time, and Nintendo is much more successful in comparison.

Such a move would make less competition for Microsoft, and close to a violation of several laws in the U.S. regarding monopolies. I think Phil realized that, but he secretly still wanted it to happen.
