One possibility, they are making a bet that ended badly. They chose poorly, which we can see in hindsight but they for w/e reason didn't see when purchasing. Google loves doing this one, because they have so much money they can burn a company on a whim and it doesn't impact their bottom line. And sometimes those companies they buy can become massive successes (e.g. the acquisition of YouTube)

Other possibility is that they wanted something from the company. Whether it's talent (employees), technology or a brand to jumpstart their own products. They may want to keep those things, or sell them. This is called asset stripping. In this scenario they have little regard for the customers of the company, they are after the assets.
