Fixed??
It is a working adblock rule getting rid of a stupid animated gif. I even put it in [PLAIN][/PLAIN] environment to prevent any possible interpretation as link (forum software shouldn't do anyway, but just in case)

Stupid animated GIF? But this is a genius animated GIF!
Do you happen to know him?

Due to the immense amount of useless images I'm seriously considering switching to a whitelist approach instead of the current blacklist method. For media files and scripts I did this long ago, so might as well go a step further reducing internet to text only… and loading image data if needed.

But why do moving images bother you so much, regardless of the content? By doing so, you lose the meaning of much of the message. In my opinion, an absurd ideosyncrasy.

A) Especially (animated) GIF files are more often than not (ab)used for carrying lowest tier jokes adding nothing to a discussion. Surrounding text is either self-contained information or of equally low value as the image.
B) Faster transfer without ballast
C) The peripheral area of the retina automatically draws our consciousness on fast movement or flickering. Same as red color. Having an animation constantly…

…repeat itself puts the viewer in involuntary condition of alert/stress. In other words: I couldn't have typed this reply without the adblocker salvaging me from sensory overload.

As with all automated filtering a whitelist would indeed make me miss some interesting pieces of information. It will require a balancing act between the problem of getting my eyes/brain tortured and the problem of throwing away something…

…important without noticing.

If people stopped posting obtrusive (huge and/or colorful and/or animated) pictures, especially in the profile messages, such considerations wouldn’t be needed. Alas, the lesser of the two evils is overblocking.
Even avatars start getting awful from time to time when many people jump on a bandwagon using the same stereotyped style.

Okay. This is the first time you've given me a reasonable, pseudo-scientific, explanation of this fact: but obviously this is not a common reaction, but of a few sensitive people, I suppose. Just turn them on for a second, and then quickly off after understanding the user's message, or not?

Not pseudo-scientific. Easy observation. It is what saves staggering smartphone zombies from walking into moving cars. At least most of the time.

You can't fully suppress the presence of an animation on an illuminated screen – even when looking at a different area - text box. Our eyes/brains work like this. Depending on environment lighting, size, strength of the screen this is still true when looking away from it

Once upon a time I had almost 150% acuity and could see quite well with rest light when other people thought it was pitch black dark. Age takes a toll. This is no more.
But an animation on a big PC monitor will still make me go up the walls when having the monitor behind(!) me. Not a joke.

I was referring to the stress or alert reaction: if they were that serious, no one would post any more pictures or movies. It only concerns a handful of delicate subjects.
Anyway on my smartphone images and movies are all equally small. 😅
