I'm pretty sure the concept of fast/slow lanes originally came from comcast back when they were trying to vote on net neutrality last time. Also, petitioning and spamming congress worked last time.. so..
What I'm trying to say is that everyone just assumes that because it's a POSSIBILITY that it could happen (even though it won't because they will dig their own financial graves the moment they do something that stupid), people keep going on about how ISPs will actually do it. As for the petitioning, it has been verified it's impossible for that to do anything this time around.
If all the main isp's do that, how would that kill them? I live in an area where only comcast is available and verizon is the most reliable mobile network. Everyone in the three towns surrounding me would have to deal with it or go with dsl. But honestly, what ever reason they have for voting out net neutrality can't be good. It still deserves attention and fear.
Do you know what is it that kills monopoly? It's monopoly itself! If they decide to charge extra fees, the people will go along with it at first, but at the same time the smaller companies will be able to steal a chunk of the market even with considerably lower speed since they won't have added fees, resulting in a huge loss of shares for the main ISPs.
That's only part of it though and I'm too lazy and bored to explain it all in detail, so just think about it yourself, it's not that hard to predict what will happen. People will stick out their asses to big companies and get fucked over, but after some time they will decide they've had enough and change things.
Comcast buys out all those smaller companies. That's why it's all we can get here. People hate comcast for their poor service, high prices, bad customer service, etc. Still the biggest cable/Internet corporation here.
What's that supposed to mean? Be on your side in what sense? In spreading misinformation and assuming a POSSIBILITY is a CERTAINTY and assuming the whole world is the US? This affects ONLY the US, this isn't as serious as people make it out to be and, worst case scenario, you people in the US will have to pay a tiny bit extra for internet, but nothing much, just a coffee less
"Just a coffee less", that too, is a possibility. Knowing Comcast, as they now charge 50+/mo for "unlimited" Home data, it's not gonna just be a "coffee" less.
You should be on our side that net neutrality shouldn't be messed with. You think it's not a big deal, or that it only affects us, but what's really happening is the door is being opened to manipulating the freedom of information. Once it's opened it just continues to grow and spread. Once other companies see how profitable it is it will be global thing.
What smaller companies? None exist, in most cities. Houston TX is the fourth largest US city, and yet we only have Comcast if you want above 40mbps. And Comcast could just buy all the smaller companies out of they proved a threat.
And even if it's a USA only thing for now, it looks like Canada is having rumbles of doing the same thing. It doesn't set a good precedent. No matter if it's drastic or minor changes that happen, monopoly ISPs have been pushing this for years. I do NOT trust these large corporations to try to do anything than squeeze money out of people.
@WeedZ There is almost NO country besides the US without AT LEAST 4 big ISPs and then some, so it will NEVER be a global thing. Here alone we have 15+ ISPs, what do you think will happen if one pulls this shit?
@Chary Even if they don't exist, it will be the perfect chance for some to start, that's how monopoly gets toppled you know. And why above 40MB/s? Stop being so spoiled, even 15MB/s is WAY more than enough to be online without problems!
You're thinking of monopoly in terms of the free market propaganda supporting capitalism. If we don't like tommy's ice cream we'll just go to billy's ice cream shop. But that's not how it works with huge corporations that can crush smaller companies and have ties to political figures, like verizon and the fcc.
@SylverReZ I've never used a disposable, seems like a waste. kinda cool idea tho. It would be nice to have vape built in to a cell phone even. "The iVape"
