I call it PS1 as well. I have no idea why but I guess I'm not the average American.

pretty sure because the original model wasnt even called the psone. The original models is just the playstation, the psone model came later in its life cycle near the release of the ps2.

I've never really heard anyone call the PS1 the PSX like ever in the UK it's either just the Playstation or PS1

It's because the PS1 was originally going to be marketed as the "PSX" in the US, instead of just "Playstation". You can find a lot of early game magazines from before it officially launched calling it the PSX cuz it's the internal name Sony used for the console for the US market. As mentioned, it wasn't until the PSOne model released after the PS2 that it was ever "officially" called the PS1.
