Wasn't YoYoGames created around Game Maker?

What you want is very limiting, as soon as your game's complexity grows, you'll need to implement things yourself. If you want to start out without using pre-built tools, there are a bunch of resources that teach programming + game making at the same time. Anyway, you should be able to create a 2D platformer with a story using today's tools I believe, since that is pretty simple anyway.

Smiley, just learn to use the UIs, then it's a joke:P Besides that, there's always RPG Maker and generally the Kadokawa Entertainment engines...

If you want a 2D platformer, Game Maker and Unity 2D are the best ones to use and Unity even has a literal step by step guide to making different kinds of simple short games, so use those to learn.

I like RPG Maker, but it wouldn't be very appropriate for a platformer. I haven't heard of the Kadokawa engines though. Googling the phrase doesn't seem to bring them up either.

Remember what I said, "generally the Kadokawa Entertainment engines", there's way more than one, they have engines for most game genres, even if RPG Maker is the only one that's famous:P For platformers, shooters, etc. they have the IG Maker. It's pretty expensive though. For a list of their stuff, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterbrain

I'll try it out. By the screenshots, I can see it supports text boxes, and RPG Maker is a breeze to use, so this should be, too. Thanks!

ALL of Kadokawa Entertainment engines are like that, basically imagine RPG Maker, but for different genres:P Simple UI, no code, kinda limited but still can make a great game and scripts can be used if you know how to program in Ruby to add more depth (or just find ready ones online) and IG Maker supports XBox 360 too if you have one!

I don't, but seeing how they are still sold, I might get one later. Expanding to other platforms is great.

I think Game Maker is worth trying, like I said it helps you get started learning programming which is useful knowledge anyway. I have barely used Unity but some people seem to like that better.

Also it's cross platform these days so you can build games for a lot of different platforms which is nice.

Let's be honest though, Game Maker is literally a pain in the ass to use, needing to make sprites and icons for pretty much everything, then layering and all that... At least Unity does some stuff automatically while still showing you the actual game code.

It's fine once you get used to it. You don't need sprites for everything, just things you want to be visible. Which is the case with any language.

Not really true, if you want invisible objects and stuff, you still need to make sprites, plus dialogue boxes and everything manually. Not saying it's bad or anything, it's a pretty good engine, but kinda too much of a pain for beginners, plus doesn't have many good guides.

No, you don't need sprites for everything. In fact you can make a whole game without using a single sprite just by using drawing functions. And there are scripts/extensions for dialog boxes.

Meaning it's not something possible for someone with NO previous experience, proving my point. If you have no experience, you have to do it the long way, making Game Maker better for those who have had a bit of practice with other engines first.

Eh. Extensions are pretty idiot-proof.

Not really, but making a full game with just those for dialogues and menus can get kinda confusing for some (I know because I used to make tutorials and people kept asking dumb things that were supposed to be idiot proof), never not underestimate humanity's intelligence:P

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
