Just following up with this to close the discussion. Someone on Reddit pointed me to gbata which has an sram patcher. It's as simple as browsing for my rom and saving the sram patched output file onto my flashcard.

I forwarded the USB adapter but I can't seem to find a driver specifically for converting parallel to USB in XP. Oh well, it was a valiant effort. Ended up getting a DS Lite on eBay for $40.
