Might be the temp sensor is blown which can happen. Our the cooler doesn't sit propet. But experience tells me it's the sensor.... Might try a fan speed software. But you need to have an eye on the temps then!

Personally I test consoles before I ship them. So in my case the best timing file is on the chip. But.... Boot times can vary a lot depending on (for example) where the customer places the box. Right above a av receiver or a big speaker can make all effort gone...

There is a way with downloading stuff online and then patching games somehow but I don't know what this is called exactly.
But there is defenitly no way to install cfw of any sort on this device.

The PS3 will tell you to format the new drive anyway. I tend to format them first on a PC but as soon you put a new Drive in a PS3 it will be formatted anyway.
