Sure, but for the average end user messing with compiling stuff and trying to figure out what files to put on the SD and where to safely download them from is a bit daunting. To me, having a starter pack or bundle put together by trusted guys like you still makes a lot of sense.
How about if we want to keep our system offline? I may be wrong, but the current plan seems to imply an Internet connection. If that's the case, I would prefer your approach.
How big of a deal is game updating? I see a lot of comments debating whether or not this leads to a ban, but why update them in the first place? Are most games generally so bad at launch that an update/patch makes that much of a difference?
