This hack would eventually see you banned from live after about 5 minutes if you could even get on at all and MS blocked the JTAG hack as well if you updated past a certain kernel. As part of JTAG and RGH you have a custom NAND memory image (all 360 consoles have various amounts of memory inside them to hold the kernel and other such things) which holds the payload of the hack a few modifications. As JTAG and RGH work in slightly different ways on RGH you can still use a current unhacked kernel if you have the relevant data from an initial hack, however you will need another NAND chip to hold it and some companies then made it so you could solder another chip onto the console and switch between hacked and unhacked (or hacked and another hacked if you want I guess) which allows the unhacked side of things to work on xbox live (this does mean no DLC, games on demand or XBLA you have not paid for or installed as PIRS DLC mind you). Personally I hold that dual nand is more trouble than it is worth (and that is not just my dislike of online games) as you have to keep up with two kernels (one hacked, one current "clean") and make sure you do not have things on your "live" profile that can only be done on a hacked machine (MS are somewhat lenient here but nobody will join you with torches and pitchforks should you get banned because of it).

On top of that there are a few little things you can do (even on a stock console) like PIRS DLC which is DLC that some game of the year/expansion pack type games have onboard. Microsoft allowed for certain content to be installed (PIRS files being the name of them) and that means if you can get it on the drive (never hard but even easier now MS allow USB drives to hold saves, DLC and XBLA after a fashion- see USB XTAF). The list of DLC you can use in this manner is not long and rarely gets anything new added to it but is worth a look through (borderlands double pack, fallout 3 DLC and much more). This is perfectly safe to do seen as you are more or less doing what MS allow you to do.

Over the years there have been a few other little hacks (profile sharing, LIVE2CON and modern warfare 2 glitch being the big three) and oddities (an earlier version of Shadow Complex had a glitch that made it so the "end of demo" wall could be bypassed) but nothing is active right now, there are a few things like profile modding (people liked to add achievements they had not got) but that gains you nothing other than a ban.

[QUOTE="FAST6191, post: 4482930, member: 32303"] It seems we have all done a fine job of confusing matters. For years the only hack was a DVD mod which involved modifying the firmware on the DVD (initially all in software but later hardware tricks/probes and eventually actual additional hardware was needed as MS blocked hacks and introduced new DVD models) and burning everything on dual layer discs. This method is still around after a fashion and very popular as it works well although for many modern games you will need a special burner. After being speculated upon for years, and seeing lots of things that would count as proof of concept, full DVD drive emulators happened aka ODDE (optical disc drive emulators) which act like a DVD drive as far as the 360 is concerned but rather than using dual layer discs you instead can load from a USB drive. Despite occasional banwaves (which have not happened for several years at time of posting) these can still go on xbox live. After the DVD hack had been around for ages along came JTAG (there was a precursor to it but let us not go there and it did not really do much of anything other than a few pieces of homebrew)- this opened up the 360 to homebrew, USB loading, onboard hard drive loading, XBLA, DLC and much more for anybody that wanted in. This hack would eventually see you banned from live after about 5 minutes if you could even get on at all and MS blocked the JTAG hack as well if you updated past a certain kernel. A few years later the reset glitch hack aka RGH came into being which had much the same result as JTAG in terms of things you can do. JTAG was blocked long before slims came about anyway. Owing to the way RGH works you can do the hack and use the same console on xbox live after a fashion.
