Gaming [HELP] CD Drive not detected

I got a Dell XPS M1530 about a year ago and reformatted it to Windows XP. After reformatting to XP, I noticed that the CD drive is no longer detected (Outside of Device Manager, that is). The driver from Dell's website doesn't work since the drive is undetected. Any ideas?

assign the drive a letter? in device manager (or was that the storage manager)?
