Leak claims a PlayStation 5 Pro will launch later this year

A YouTuber has leaked some insider paperwork that reveals what future plans Sony has in store for the next PlayStation hardware. The channel Moore's Law Is Dead showcased what are purportedly internal documents directly from PlayStation's developer portal, stating that a PlayStation 5 Pro is allegedly in the works.

According to these papers, Sony aims to have a PS5 Pro--codenamed Trinity--out for the 2024 holiday season, with the system boasting major performance increases over the original PS5. Supposedly, the PlayStation 5 Pro will offer 33.5 teraflops, compared to the PlayStation 5's current 10.28 teraflops, and will utilize Sony's own in-house developed upscaling software, which will provide benefits similar to AMD's FSR or NVIDIA's DLSS, with the potential to upscale up to 8K resolution. Further features are listed below.

  • Rendering 45% faster than PS5
  • 2-3x Ray-tracing (x4 in some cases)
  • 33.5 Teraflops
  • PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) upscaling/antialiasing solution
  • Support for resolutions up to 8K is planned for future SDK version
  • Custom machine learning architecture
  • AI Accelerator, supporting 300 TOPS of 8 bit computation / 67 TFLOPS of 16-bit floating point

While Moore's Law Is Dead has a hit and miss track record when it comes to leaking accurate information, another reputable outlet for leaks named Insider-Gaming claimed that the information within the video was true, and that Trinity devkits had been sent out to developers as early as September 2023, reiterating the claims of a holiday 2024 launch window for the console.

People need to stop creating hype and getting sheep to demand pro consoles and just let that console live its life then move onto actual next generation hardware.
PS5 is a disappointing console (gen) so if I'm really gonna buy one, it'd probably be a PS5 Pro, never update it, and play the backups on it. Mainly PS4 backups I figure since there isn't a whole lot of PS5 games I'm interested.

There's not even a Killzone game made for PS5 or a MotorStorm for PS5. Sony is a disgrace.

Seems pointless with the Series X/S floundering. How do they expect to make a profit on the console unless it's gonna be $600 at launch? Seems too soon, but then again It's Sony.

Great. Will be an instabuy when it comes out.

Looking about the same as the PS4 to PS4 Pro upgrade which isn't a bad thing. If I'm able to play PS5 games at a higher framerate (fidelity settings/4K @ 60fps) I'm content.

I'll sell my current PS5 then and will have the best in console gaming for a couple of hundred euro's.

For raw power PC's the way to go obviously but I'm happy with my PS5 and its ecosystem so any improvement on this will be even better.

"Best console"

Well, technically yes, but not a whole lot of games the PS5 has to play. Even Rōnin looks like an early PS4 or late PS3 game, so that's pretty disappointing for a console that brags about having the best graphics.

Does Sony indeed claim/brag about having the best (console) graphics?

Yes, technically the Series X has the most power and in theory should be able to have the best performance in games. In reality however there is little difference; some games perform better on Series X, some better on the PS5. There is no winner regarding performance.

However, Digital Foundry's best game graphics (including PC) of 2022 did go to a PS5 game, Horizon Forbidden West. The year before to Rachet and Clank Rift Apart, also PS5. Nothing the Series X or PC couldn't do but these games were not released on those systems. So in that regard yes, for consoles and PC it did produce the best graphics according to one of the most knowledgeable and experienced authorities on this matter.

That there are also games that don't reach these levels is only logical. Same goes for all other platforms.

Sadly there are very few if any games for which I'm excited but that's a problem for PC, Xbox and Switch also.

With development cycles being multiple years long, you can't feasibly expect tons of AAA graphics games. Those days are just over, on all platforms.

Having said that, the no games meme is pretty dumb also as according to Moby there are currently 2366 games for PS5. If it's your only system, or you have a potato PC, that's a pretty decent catalogue.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
