Going by the "if I've answered a question five times already" rule.
Of course, there is always the option to wait for someone else to answer the question more politely - but chances are, if the answer is a little more complex, people might tell you a part of the answer, or one part they understand, but not paint you the entire picture.
At which point we are right at the crossroads of
- either you deal with "experts" ("I say, Lord Percy, how invigorating!") who tend to have answered a very original question a few times already - after just a few months
or
- you are banking on the "i've just discovered this myself - and here is how you do it" proponents of the "still in the process of giving back" ethos - but those usually dont tend to stick around, and get fewer in numbers if you ask a question on a topic thats not - first and foremost - current.
In the short term the "everyone gives back just a little" method of sharing favors and information freely works. In the long term, the chances, of you asking the same group of people questions they have attended to dozens of times in the past - rises.
Striking a balance should be the goal. Theres where "maybe I should read up on the information already existing in this forum" comes in. If you then still have a question - feel free to ask it.
This is a thing in forums, that don't structure themselves around being the best "scrolling questions feed" they can be - but rather - communities, in which you can count on people you know (that would be the optimum, because it strengthens the chances of people actually feeling a need to give back, after they have received a favor) to give informed answers.
(This still was a very "general question". Concerning "all the emulators", which would be hard to answer - if unlike in this case - some would work, and some wouldnt. Here the initial believe was, that saving would not work on any of them. This was easily negated. ("Saving works on all of them.") In cases like these, irony (ok, sarcasm..
) is a pretty good fit..
