I did some digging (really it was just installing a theme and seeing what was going on in the logs) and figured out what was causing all of these menus freezing.

I coldboot Tiramisu/Aroma:
1. Set up Wupclient.
2. Run these commands in the terminal(NOTE: Replace the X with your region console. 0 = Japan. 1 = USA. 2 = Europe):
*** w.chmod("/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10040X00/content/Common/Package/Men.pack", 0x660)
*** w.chmod("/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10040X00/content/Common/Package/Men2.pack", 0x660)
*** flush_mlc()
*** ios_reset()
3. The Wii U should restart and the menu should load.

I dont have any coldboot CFW installed:
Getting the Wii U Menu WUP
1. Download JNUSTool and extract it on your computer.
2. Open the config file in a text editor and replace [COMMONKEY] with the Wii U Common Key.
3. Open a CMD window or Terminal in the same folder as JNUSTool and run java -jar JNUSTool.jar 0005001010040X00 -dlEncrypted.
*** Replace the X with your region console. 0 = Japan. 1 = USA. 2 = Europe
4. Copy the .app, .h3, and title.* files to the install folder on the root of your SD Card.

Installing the Wii U Menu WUP
1. Set up UDPIH with the README on github.
2. Once in recovery_menu, navigate to Install WUP and select it.
3. When it is finished installing, press any button to go back to the main menu and then navigate to Shutdown to shut off the console.
4. Wii U Menu should now load. Dont fuck with themes anymore or just use SDCafiine for the love of god.

If you have cold boot into tiramisu enabled hold + during boot and select homebrew launcher, from there you can start the theme installer.
If you have some you need to hold y during boot, select tiramisu and then follow the tiramisu instructions.

that wouldnt work since the root issue is actually a permission error

Good to know. But reinstalling via nuspli should also help. The only downsite to that is that the CB title get's reset and so you lose that backdoor (and have to use the pico ifit goes wrong)

I pushed an update to ThemeMii that should fix the permssions issue by setting them correctly
so reinstalling the theme with ThemeMii should now also fix the error?

Here someone took the time two write detailed instructions for wupclient:

And here for udpih:

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
What's really cool about Pi's tho is you can have multiple SD cards with different OS on each SD card and change from say a gaming machine to a full fledged pc if wanted
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Plus all bios are set up and usually includes at least 128gbs or 64
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah but if your main goal is just to play n64 and GameCube you can save about $50 and have the portability option

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True, but on 2 monitors at 4k. Its just want you want really, to each they own.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
For a kids aspect Anbernic would be the better option they'd probably melt over the price on a good 4k display

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
For that texasroo guy, I'd recommend the Speak and say as his first system.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
So they buy a pi5 kit for about $150 and say a 28" 4k display probably looking around $400 total
