And petting should mean the same everywhere, e.g NOFX's album heavy petting zoo

Care to point me in the direction of what the Australian Oxford Dictionary defines petting and patting as?

Edit. None of this even matters. Just forget it. I don't care.

The Macquarie Dictionary is the official dictionary of Australian English, but unfortunately you have to pay (or get a free 30 day trial) to use it, which is dumb.

The Macquarie Dictionary also has entries for 'petting zoo' and 'petting farm'. So if we're going by that... I am still correct. I don't see the problem people are having with 'petting' having more than one meaning. Also from the same dictionary:

–verb (t) (petted, petting)
10. to treat as a pet; fondle; indulge.

11. to fondle or caress amorously.

amorous
/ˈæmərəs/ (say 'amuhruhs)

adjective

1. inclined or disposed to love: *the nursing-staff of the hospital was composed of women of amorous nature –xavier herbert, 1938.

2. in love; enamoured.

3. showing love: amorous sighs.

4. relating to love

So, the official dictionary of Australian English defines petting at 'To fondle or caress with love'. Which is what is being done to the cat. Both patting and petting are correct.

Fondle or caress amorously would be the sex meaning. Nobody here would say “pet” to mean patting an animal it would just sound odd. There's lots of Australian words which sound odd in the US and US words that sound odd here. That's ok, they're different languages. They're allowed to be different. The world would be boring if we were all identical.

Your official dictionary clearly shows that petting is an acceptable term whether people choose to use it or not. And again, petting zoo/farm are also entries in your dictionary. Are you telling me that they are referring to places people can go to sexually grope animals? I guess write them and tell them it needs to be changed to patting zoo/farm, and that their definitions of amorous also need fixing?

It's like me trying to tell people we don't say 'soda' here and that the correct word is 'pop'. Same thing. Just because no one around here says soda, doesn't make it wrong. I stand my point. Petting is an acceptable term and it's proven to be acceptable in your dictionary. If you want to say patting, that's fine, but petting is not an incorrect term.

In this country, petting does not mean affectionately patting an animal. I know you don't use the word "thongs" to mean light sandals for your feet that are often used on the beach. Are you telling me it wouldn't sound weird to hear someone use the term like that? It is the same here with the word "pet". Can you please stop now?

Actually people here DO refer to a certain type of sandles as thongs. Typically lightweight beach sandles. So you're wrong. Others are the ones picking and choosing what is accurate in the official AU dictionary & what is not, and having an issue with the fact words have more than one meaning. Not me. Just because you say it one way, doesn't make others wrong. Why is that concept so difficult after proof of both being correct has been given?

It is not a proof. Amorous is not the same as affection. If a teacher acts amorously towards a student they would be fired.

You're picking and choosing definitions like crazy. Although you flubbed it up and proved me right at the same time. Thanks! :)

How exactly? What am I picking and choosing? You provided a definition that said petting meant stroking and fondling amorously. You thought amorously meant affectionately. But I have shown that amorously means with sexual desire. Therefore the definition you found, that petting means stroking and fondling amorously, means stroking and fondling in a sexual way. I mean if you normally do that with your pets, that's your prerogative I guess
