annoying people wanting to assemble their own computers .

rant .

it's annoying when people want to assemble their own computers . people contact you , and they always expect an instant answer . if you want to know more , you should actually research . then following that is what they want in their computers . what happened to knowing what you want and not what you just need ? people investing in things they really don't need even in the next 10 years . "i want a computer with an i7 , 8GB of RAM , 2x1TB HDD and a 6950 ." lately , it's been a real bother , people [more like people who don't even have jobs] , wanting to just get the top of the line computer but not realizing what they really need for the future . they look at parts , jump to the higher price ranges and than instantly choose them not knowing the possibilities or even half the usage of the part .

there's a kid , 15 who added me on xfire after being interested in assembling his own computer . started off with exactly what i said before ; i7, 8GB of RAM, a 6950 and 2x1TB HDDs . he has no past knowledge on computers , doesn't even know what some things could be used for , and don't know why he chose such expensive parts . i've given him sites, guides, personal opinions towards his choices yet it is such a bother since he keeps on persisting on buying certain things . i understand , some people dream and actually buy these parts , but he is freakin' 15 . he plays CoD4 and JUST Minecraft . i asked him what he plans on doing with the computer , but all he wants to do is play games . not interested in anything else ; editing , rendering , nothing .

i told him , well if you are going to be just playing games , you don't need ALL those parts . you can make a computer for much less money to satisfy your needs . so i told him , an i5 2500K or Phenom II x4 , 4GB of RAM, 2x500GB HDD or 1x1TB HDD and a 5770 would do you good . he listened , then came back . he feels determined to wanting an i7 although he really doesn't need it at all . at one point , he even tried telling me he wanted a Phenom II x6 and i was literally annoyed and bothered at his thoughtless choices .

he doesn't understand the value of money . i told him , get what you need not what you just want . don't go all out with your money because really , there are cheaper parts that will satisfy your needs and possibly for the next 5 years if that's all you are going to be doing . he expects me to be able to answer his every question like i am some sort of resource . he is a lazy ass kid who expects everything will be given to him right away . he clearly doesn't listen and wants to be spoon-fed . i would slap this could just so he could understand that money is not easy to get .

Wow what an idiot.
I bought a laptop with 2GB RAM, Intel Pentium/Celeron 2-core (lol i forget) and Radeon HD integrated and i'm very happy with it.
Although it seems i may need to upgrade my RAM to 3GB or 4GB.
But i'm good :P

And it's your fault for still talking to him.

If he wants to spend his money, let him. Controlling how someone spends their money is none of your business.

So that means i can buy a Ninja-Assassin-Parrot? :D

Give'r, I don't care.

Hell you can spend your entire life savings and sell your house and car just so you can buy every fleshlight and every porno in the world, it's none of my business.

Is it stupid? Yes.
Should I stop you? No.

am i controlling him of how i am spending his money ? yes , i am .
looks like i am done talking with him .

next time he tries to message me , i am just going to agree with everything he says .
makes life so much easier .

:)

I have a friend that is bloody incredibly smart where computers are concerned.

I understand em and I can build em, but the parts, I can rarely shop worth a damn.

I usually will ask him 'what's a good replacement' if something I have has stopped cutting the mustard. He usually gives me the right choices.

My laptop is a 400 dollar so utterly 3 years ago tech item. But it is new, and it does all I need. I am not a gamer though, so spending 600 bucks for better would have been a waste of 200 bucks.

I have 6.5 TB in my largely way past due to be upgraded desktop. The other parts are just fine, the massive storage is because I have about 1500 dvds as images stored on it (I hate needing to sort through dvd binders eh).

My buddy is always upgrading. He usually sells me his current parts for a song, to help fund his latest addition to the latest 'thing'. I don't mind getting last years killer parts though for peanuts.

Agreed. There are so many parts these days that most people don't even need. A simple core2duo computer is super cheap these days as it has been for the past few years and it more than sufficient for most people. Most people just do a little bit of email and web browsing. Maybe play some simple videos off youtube and some music files. That's it.

I7's aren't expensive these days either as long as you know how to budget it right. Nobody needs a hexacore. I can build an i7 950 with 6 gigs of triple channel DDR3 these days and just in parts costs less than $1000. That is justifiably cheap. Now if he wants to go crazy and get the latest graphic card and 24 gigs of RAM etc that is going a bit too far. Even the hard drives 2TB is only $79.99 these days for a good one that will live for quite a long time.

If you want him to save 500 bucks then by all means suggest the i5, i3, core2, older video card will run EVERY game you mentioned in this post. One does not need a DX11 video card to satisfy those games nor most other games that are out or are upcoming.

Usually people suggest just purchasing an xbox360 or ps3 these days to save money but there's more stuff you can do with a pc such as one of the games you mentioned being pc only.

Anyway it all comes down to how much money the kid has to spend. Usually kids don't have much money at all so if he can afford an i7, I doubt it will hurt to blow all that cash at this point in his life because he isn't making any right now I can gurantee you that. Once there are bills to pay, that is when saving the cash matters more. But I would suggest limiting the system build to about $1k because these days that much will even get you a super high end laptop.

Tell the kid I got the HD 5770. (I do)
It runs all the games he asks. At highest settings. At high framerates. Will slow-down a lliiiitttlee bit in extreme firefights but to a very playable framerate (20 fps?)
Tell me I got a cpu which is slightly worse than his (at least I think so? Amd phenom II x4 955 be not overclocked. It's a bit worse than the i5 2500k iirc) It can do all tasks I want at the same time (15 internet pages, minecraft on my other screen, iTunes in the background, steam, and still have at least a core of power idling, of course this isn't the case when playing real games, but I can still use iTunes in the background..
4GB ram is what I have, 1333MHz, does what it needs to do. No problems at all. Didn't have to use virtual memory yet.
Can't say much about the HDD greatness, I don't 500 movies and am too lazy to clean them up after watching.. I've got one 500GB HDD, simply enough.

Overall, my pc is perfect. For me, and for him. And the suggested pc is slightly better
I am 15 as well btw. If he reads this:
You do not need an i7. Seriously, the i5, or phenom II x4 900+ is perfect. They run EVERYTHING. I can play crysis 1 on Highest settings without real lag. Minecraft... even my old pc with a pentium 4 could run that with ease. CoD 4, NO PROBLEM. You do NOT want to spend that much on a pc you CERTAINLY DO NOT NEED. It's like buying a garage for your home, and then abandoning it. It's useless and ridiculous.
Please, do forward this post to him.

Although suggesting buying a PC with the parts that can run the latest things now is not the best idea.
Trying to buy a PC that will last 5+ years and still run future games is a better idea, rather than spending a grand 2 years later because this PC is too slow for the latest stuff.
Of course he can replace the parts further down the line though.

Two things, firstly you need to stop allowing people to live off your knowledge. If they want to make stupid decisions, let them, you're not the one losing money.
Secondly, I use an i5 760 and an AMD Radeon 5770, and I have had no issues with any game I have thrown at it, whether it be BFBC2, Portal 2, or even Crysis 2. The i7 is only really useful to people who do more intensive stuff than gaming, such as heavy-duty rendering, or calculations of some other sort.
