I've been hating on Mortal Kombat a lot but I decided to just put my money where my mouth is and buy the game. I figured a Vita version would be good so I get a little more time into my handheld and it's apparently a really good version. Between containing all the DLC and extra modes, it's great according to reviews.
First off, a funny anecdote some of you already heard. I see the game on Amazon and after reading up on it I go "alright". Add to cart, purchase for $40. Next day I read on Dealzon that they put the damn game on sale for half that price. The next day, Dealzon says Gamestop is selling it for $10. What the fuck. If I contemplated my purchase for two more days I would have gotten it for a 1/4th of the price.
And then all of this didn't even matter because I accidentally shipped it to my dad. I ordered this game earlier this month and I get two day shipping on my dad's Amazon Prime account. But my dad just forwarded it to me today so me buying it earlier made no fucking difference.
But I digress. Onto the game.
As everyone was moaning about, the textures and such do take a pretty large hit. Admittedly the game looks fine at a distance in typical fights, but it does look pretty bleh up close when their doing their openings or doing X-Ray moves. I guess they wanted to make the compromise of textures and lighting to make the game run smooth. And it really does. It's very well animated and very fluid.
I do like how the fights go in this game, it feels more like a two way street rather than "Japanese fighters" where it's just about getting like 50 hit combos. It's a lot more to and fro. I'm still new to it though so I'm rather inexperienced but the combat seems to work well.
I'm in Story Mode right now and I'm very pleased with it. I'm actually surprised that they made a good story mode. I mean the story isn't exactly Mass Effect here but it flows nicely and it's a fun experience. It segways into fights pretty well. Only issue is that if you get a character you don't like, you're stuck with them for a chapter. I just finished Scorpions for reference.
Also, oddly I find myself using the D-Pad. I thought I never would. The analog seemed too slippery though and the D-Pad felt very accurate. The smaller Vita pad actually works really well here.
Still, it seems like yet another solid fighter for the Vita. Between this, UMvC3, BlazBlue, and the upcoming SFxT, it seems like the handheld to get for fighting fanatics.
