Spec Ops: The Line

I played this over the course of two days at a friend's house. Oddly I played it when he was asleep with ANOTHER FRIEND WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH GBATEMP and lent me the game.

I didn't think much of the game until I read reviews that weren't trashing it for being a boring military shooter. I mean on one hand it kinda is but it got huge praises for a story you actually give a shit about. Also Yahtzee Croshaw even gave it a thumbs up (something he RARELY does) so that peaked my interest. Also it was thrown into my lap by A FRIEND WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH GBATEMP so why not play it?

It's a rather strong game. Narrative wise it's very good. "Mature" is a good word to describe it. But not the "mature" you think of. It's not overly controversial or intentionally trying to gather some publicity by what it pulls and the "mature" label isn't an excuse to be drawn out graphic sex scenes in it like other games that may or may not be The Witcher 2. It's "mature" in a Mass Effect way. It has flawed characters and it explores a lot of controversial topics and themes.

First thing I'll mention is that it actually has like 5 endings, which is something that should pique the interest of all those "I HATE COD CUZ SINGLE PLAYER ON IT SUX" people. While yeah, it is only a 5-ish hour single player with little point in replaying outside of your standard collectibles and difficulty options, it presents a great story that compliments the 5 hours. Anything longer would feel too drawn out here and would be repeating the motions honestly. So while it being short may be a flaw for the game, it's a compliment for the story.

It also does a lot of great things here. It does give you choice in moral decisions. I'll say that these really have no relevance on the plot as the endings are all up to your choice at the end and not the sum of your choices throughout the game but it works here for a reason. The choices aren't meant to change up how the game develops, but more so weigh on the player. The game does blur between you and the main character and taps on the fourth wall now and then to show just how much of what happens is the game is caused by you and the character. Even the loading screens will remind you that the game is YOUR fault.

So yes, it's a sad game, there's no bright ending here, but it's deep, it's dark, and it's gritty. Not in the "it tries too hard" sense, but more that it just needs to be that way for the subject material.

The downside I guess is that, game wise, it is a rather generic TPS. You crouch behind chesthigh walls while samey bad guys shoot and you and you peek and shoot. There's some minor aspects like sand, which becomes pretty prominent. You can shoot glass behind an enemy for example to have the sand behind it pour out and knock them out. There will also be sandstorms at certain parts that make the game a bit more run and gunny. You also get two teammates to sic on select bad guys but it's still very generic.

But gameplay is hardly everything in a game and I suggest playing the game for a fantastic story. Maybe wait for a cheaper price point of like $20 or so.

Your friend was asleep with your other friend or one friend was asleep and you played it with the other?

edit: also gahars already made a huge post about it so it's pretty obvious who you are talking about.

Fucking loved the game, the end was a mindfuck and I am p. sure I was slightly traumatized when I saw it.
Also, just wondering, are you gonna do a impressions post for the ME3 Leviathan DLC? Its coming out this 28th for all consoles/PC :V

My friend is honestly terrible with actually sleeping properly so by the time I got to his house he already didn't sleep for a day. By the time someone who may or may not be Gahars arrived, he basically fell asleep within the hour. So we popped in Spec Ops and I played it over the course of two days (not back-to-back but we went there two separate days and faced the same issue).

But if it was confusing, I went to Friend A's house. Friend B arrived. Friend A fell asleep. Friend B and I played Spec Ops.

TBH I didn't even buy any of the ME2 DLC and I don't think I'll bother with ME3's DLC.

I saved the image this is based off of a while ago with the idea to make it the way it is now. I went to pirate Photoshop CS5 but learned that the crack I used for the trial version wouldn't work anymore since the trial for CS5 is replaced by CS6 (the crack would make the trial infinite hence making it a legit version of Photoshop with no hoops to jump through). So I put off editing the photo but eventually got Paint.net to give it a try. It worked better than expected and I decided to just change it up.

If you wanted the long story.

A FRIEND WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH GBATEMP? Sounds like a dashing rogue to me.

Love this game just because of its story. Gameplay was alright, but as you said it was generic-y. Just recently...like...yesterday or something I think a coop mode was released which is...alright.

My only complaint with this game besides the generic gameplay is the crappy multiplayer. Just isn't all that good compared to any other shooter.

It's just kinda ironic that when it comes to generic military shooters that games with great multiplayer and boring single player often get a larger pass on their detractor but when its flipped a lot more criticism is put on the game. I mean Battlefield 3 came out and everyone said the single player is bad and dumb but it still got great scores and even the devs were able to pawn off the single player as a "glorified tutorial" and that it doesn't even matter since it's a multiplayer game. The single player was more of a "bonus" on an otherwise multiplayer game. Here it's just vice versa. It has great single player and that's the focus of the game, the multiplayer is just a "bonus" if you want. Odds are it'll never get traction and it'll probably be forgotten but that's the same thing with most games on the flip side of the coin.

EDIT: And I said BF3 instead of CoD since CoD is at least a bit more well received on single player. It's definitely got much better set pieces and moments and the stories and narrative are sometimes pretty good.

tl;dr: It's a single player-focused game with a multiplayer option as a bonus compared to multiplayer-focused games with a single player option as a bonus.
