Why I stopped waiting and updated my 3DS

First of all, I nabbed a 4.4 3DS XL during the holidays. I immediately went to see if there were any flashcarts available. Long story short, found out about gateway but didnt want to pay $80 for it so I never bought it. Fast forward to the revelations of the Gateway Brick incidents (which everyone here fervently denied) I decided to stay away from Gateway and watch the MT card. Nothing developed and I was tired of having my 3DS but not being able to play anything. It was when Nintendo offered the Four Swords promotion that was the tipping point in getting me to update. I didn't want to be some slave to an unknown overseas company. So after updating, I decided it was just not worth it to wait. Nintendo has covered their bases so far and I commend them on that. I usually like to mod or get a flashcart to avoid paying for games. Now that I've updated, I've gotten to enjoy plenty of eshop titles (all bought during price drops) and whatever 3DS game I get, its either used or below $20. And it feels great. This is just an anecdote to those still waiting like I was. Updating and being able to enjoy your 3DS at 100% isn't a bad thing, being held hostage at the expense of an unknown overseas company with shady business practices is.

You're giving bad advice, because you can do pretty much everything right now on emuNAND. You're talking in what if's, which is ridiculous. What if CFW comes out tomorrow? What if Gateway's multi-rom comes out tomorrow with no brick code? What if MT-card released their update? What if emunand keeps getting updated?

If you don't prepare for what ifs (reasonable ones that are likely to happen), then that is just ignorance. You are free to be as ignorant as want.

Wow, attacking a 3DS user because he doesn't want to support a shitty overrated product and use it for legit purposes. That was thoughtful.

Whoa now, careful with that. Sane comments are not appreciated around these parts.
well, if you are in united states and you could access 3ds games which are the cheapest, you don't really have reasons to use gateway other than using it to make it region free. me in the other hand, because the game price is imported and more expensive than states, I kinda have some sort of justification. the games are not available, etc etc. since I moved to NZ, my 3DS cannot play any of pal region games, and the price is like twice of the states. sometimes I cannot believe how ridiculous region locking is.

still, I'm eyeing for discounted games in play asia though, I will definitely buy the games I really like when they have price drop.

I can see how that is justified. I completely disagree with region locking as well and wish Nintendo wouldn't. Thats why as stated, Im trying to reach out to those who are on the fence. Not those who have invested in Gateway.

I've been thinking for a while I would have been better off going legit on my 3DS. I've played most 9/10 3DS games and the only two I've liked are Donkey Kong Country Returns (which I've finished and quit playing) and Mario Kart 7. So now that I only play Mario Kart 7 I think I would have been better off buying a legit copy so I could play online.

With that said I still haven't played Zelda or Bravely Default since I'm afraid I might brick my 3DS. I refuse to play online with emuNAND for the same reason.

2.0b1 supports all that. You could just buy Mario Kart and play it online with emunand. Same with Zelda and Bravely Default. You can refuse to play it, but it's for nothing since you won't get bricked.

If you don't prepare for what ifs (reasonable ones that are likely to happen), then that is just ignorance. You are free to be as ignorant as want.

It's not reasonable at all to assume that the 3DS scene is going to disappear anytime soon. Gateway might disappear, and to be honest in a year they probably won't even be relevant, but that doesn't mean that suddenly everyone else is going to s

I am not going to discuss the morality or legality of flashcarts, but with $80, I have access to the entire 3DS library (minus Pokemon and Animal Crossing; will get to that soon), whereas for the same price, you can only purchase two games.

Although I have never used emuNAND, from what I remember, I can emulate the 7.0 firmware with 2.0b1 in order to play Pokemon and Animal Crossing from the cartridge, if I choose to do so.

I purchased my 3DS XL in September for this flashcart, but I understood what 'risks' I may be taking by choosing to 'sell myself' to Gateway. Personally, I enjoy having 'hacked' devices in which I can simply download a new game, so to me, the wait for new firmware is not an issue.

In terms of the brick code implemented in Gateway's 2.0b2 firmware, I agree 100% that it was a very poor choice on their part, as I think of the users of the clone cards that don't go on these forums, and now have bricked devices, simply because Gateway was trying to make a point. I have chosen to stay away from this firmware, but at the end of the day, Gateway seems to be the only true flashcart for the 3DS right now, so I will simply wait until their final 2.0 release is out to enjoy any new features.

Thank You for this post. Forums are for sharing information and ideas. If you don't care about what this person has to say. Don't read it and move on. Why troll him? This forum has way too many trolls that should be banned IMO.

I am in the same exact situation as you. I have a 4.4 3DS XL and I have been waiting for an acceptable flashcart solution. I am an IT person and when I read about "emunand" I LOL and I knew it had the potental to brick consoles. So, I stayed away. It is not an ideal solution. I would perfer a low risk solution. This 3DS will remain on 4.4. For me Flashcarts are a way to try before I buy. I also travel a lot so having many games on one cart is very nice. I 100% buy software I believe in. I would like to keep this option open. I could always sell it at a good price to someone that would like to use it for a gateway.

I picked a different path and bought a new 3DS XL (Zelda edition). I picked up Bravory Default and Project X Zone from Amazon. I am enjoying both games. :)

The Gateway card is not so much a hacking device as a pirating device. A pirating device is not exactly going to have the best reputation, by default, and Gateway managed to lower their reputation even more by secretly infecting their customers with malware.

If there were some significant legitimate hacking uses for the 3ds flashcart, like there is for the DS carts, it might even be worth a look, but there are not. When the Zelda special edition 3DS XL came out, I did not even hesitate to buy it. When there are some legitimate uses for 3DS hacking, I might give it another look, but after what Gateway did, I certainly would be unlikely to trust any of their future products or recommend them to others.

Except you know, the whole part where devices are being bricked left and right. I sincerely doubt that emunand will be sustainable forever. Like I said, your device is being held at the whim a company who has already damaged their reputation. How and why they are getting the continued support is beyond my comprehension.

Well, if you check the poll about bricks, it's not left and right, the majority of people didn't get brick, only a few. And if you keep up with the post here, some people found out the (maybe) ways to avoid bricking, or ways that will leads to bricking, so just avoid the ways that might lead to bricking.

What happens if Nintendo discovers a way to prevent emunand for going past 7.0?

They have ;)

Dunno if they only will use this for games, but if they want, they can shit on every "emuNAND" user by just using the new encryption on important parts of the firmware. That would render every single implementation (redNAND, "emuNAND") useless for future firmwares.

Thats fine, considering the fact that youve already invested in gateway. There is still that ever present risk of bricking and becoming obsolete in terms of being able to use your 3DS at 100%.

Thank you for a rational discourse! That seems like too much to ask for these days. I too had considered getting a second 3DS but at the time of the Zelda promotion, I didn't have money to waste and wanted the four swords before it was over. I decided that if I ever have money to blow in the future, I'll go hunting for another 4.4 device for homebrew!

You know what forum you're on? Let me tell you since apparently you don't realize. 3DS - Hacking & Homebrew HACKING

He's basically saying I have a 3DS that could get hacked but screw it it's too much work to keep up with everything and Gateway's terrible blablabla. No one is even telling him to get a Gateway, just that he could have used their firmware.

Now if some new flash cart comes out or homebrew comes out he's out of luck. All because of the "hassle".

And your changed viewpoint is hilarious. A few months ago every post that came out of you was you whining about Gateway not supporting past 4.5 and how you couldn't afford a new 3DS blablabla. Every single post. Then as soon as the Gateway fiasco occurred "Glad I didn't buy this POS" as if you could anyway.

This forum has been here since the 3DS was released and no "hacks" avalable. It is to share information.

Are you saying upgrading means he will never be able to hack his 3DS? The "Hacks" currently available are dangerous if you use emunand and are not going to last much longer. There are so many compatible 3DS consoles on that firmware version.

There will be new hacks.

Your post has no well though out ideas. You have added nothing but negativity without any critical thinking. You are a troll and need to stop posting on this thread.

Wow I had never heard of that. Gotta say, they've learned their lesson from the DS and Wii. Why is this not a bigger issue now?

been using GW 2.0b1 with no problems
nobody in their right mind would update just for 4 swords, which i already have and got for free ages ago after my ambassador games, and which is totally not worth updating for

Good for you man! If you've read the post it was more than that, it was other games that I wanted to play. This thread does not apply to you.

weatMod.... Just wondering if you have any technical knowledge at all? Do you understand how electronics work? Are you aware what NAND does? There might not even be "brick" code. It could just be bad code. It is beta, you are risking your console anytime you mess with the NAND of any device/console.

For me sometimes, I will buy a console for only one game. If this guy wanted to play 4 swords. It sounds like it was worth it to him. So, I believe he was in his right mind. He is also enjoying other games.

Why do so many people on this forum just have bad logic? There should be a down-vote option and bad post like this should get hidden like in other forums.

well enough techincal knowledge to have already backed up my NAND.bin, , but probably not enough to be bothered getting a rasberry PI if i brick , but i can always pay someone else in the extremely unlikely event of a brick , since i am using 2.0 b1 and since bricks are like less than what? 10% of users? to overstate it , brick risk for 2.0b1 beta is probably like 0.1% if that

Ohh Gbatemp... So, he's stupid or lazy because he's paying for HIS games? Shame on him! He is a very bad person for making you pirates look like the thieves you are.

Maybe you guys are lazy, why don't you try having a job, saving money and spending it on the games you like. I live in Mexico and video games are WAY more expensive here than in most places. But I love buying MY games, I love giving support to those that make the games I love and it feels great.

Oh dear, I updated my 3DS a few months ago too, for the new Pokémon games. That makes me a bad person too, right?

Come on guys, he did what he wanted to do. Why not let him live with it? It doesn't matter if it's Hacking and Homebrew, he's still a user with a voice out there.

Your welcome. If you are looking for another 4.4 3DS. You should consider buying a used vita. I just picked up a used Vita for $80. Even when they do develop home-brew for the 3DS it is lacking in power compared to the vita. Also OMG of the OLED on the Vita is great.

My exploited vita will currently play PSP, PS1 (no sound), SNES, Sega Gen, Sega CD, GBA, and many more ROMs flawlessly. On the Vita's screen the games look great.

They already have a native unreleased hack for running homebrew with the Vita's full power. The though is if they released the hack it would only hurt an already stuggling platform. Much like the unreleased Wii U back by failoverflow.

Just my thoughts though. :)

<shrug> I bought a second 3DS instead. The new one is legit and fully updated, the old one is on 4.5 and exploit ready waiting for ports of Abuse, Descent, Doom, Quake and a host of other other commercial software that has been open sourced or released as freeware (I have the legal discs/HOG's/WAD's/etc). I also am hoping the 3DS to make a showing at the next Assembly or any other demo scene party; the results should be nothing short of amazing.

Congrats on your choice, but I chose a different path... And it has made all the difference. <eye roll>

It's k guys, he's a reformed pirate. He used to not like to pay for his games, but he saw the light when an evil overseas company held his DS hostage by threatening to brick it.
