Yup, my gut got the better of me and sent me out to buy a Playstation 4. Which I did.
I got the Black Friday bundle which is the same as a PS4 at MSRP but with GTA V and TLoU Remastered included. I also got a free charging station from Target. Woohoo.
But more importantly are my thoughts.
First things first, I think I should note one of my most obnoxious problems. So I get it all set up and I keep trying to play GTA V. But the system keeps shutting off. Not even just shutting off, like going completely unresponsive. Black screen (but still sending something through the HDMI), controller is unresponsive, everything. I have to unplug the damn thing to restart it. Eventually I figure it might be overheating (which is a bit silly honestly) since the bottom is quite warm so I put it up on its side. It's never had an issue since then. So not really a huge issue (I thought my system was faulty), but definitely feels like an oversight. It was just on my carpet, nothing more.
But anyway, the system itself. I like it a lot. I think the big thing that strikes me about it is its subtlety. It has a ton of new features packed into it but it doesn't beat you over the head with them like the Wii for instance. All the features are put to use in an unobtrusive way. Like the light bar, touchpad, and motion controls don't feel forced, they feel both optional and very functional. Again, I haven't played any launch titles yet, which are typically the worst perpetrators of shoving useless features down your throat, but from the games I played, it seems like they're welcome additions.
Graphically the system does look very good, it's definitely a step above the PS3. A lot of people are doubting this "leap" but I see it much like the Xbox/PS2 -> Xbox 360/PS3 leap. At first, the titles are noticeably better but not huge leaps, but over the years you'll see the tech really come out of it.
The Vita functionality is also quite good. It works very well for remote play for most games. Some games, however, are just not tailored for the Vita. Games that require a huge screen like GTA V just don't work. Text is unreadable and the necessity for a lot of controls makes using the L1/R1 and L3/R3 buttons troublesome. However, I've played quite a bit of Injustice and Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on it and it works fine. Input delay is almost nonexistent and the controls are great for these types of games.
I think it's a worthy purchase and the library is already pretty decent, with next year seeming very promising (Bloodborne, Dark Souls II remaster, MGS V, Uncharted 4, etc). I already own GTA V and TLoU (obviously), plus I got Injustice and Isaac from PS+. I also bought Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut because mechs and I have Wolfenstein, inFamous, and Destiny coming in the mail.
It's gonna be a fun time.
