Why I play Pokemon legitimately

Hey. I decided to make a quick post on Pokemon legitimacy since people are always saying "just edit the IVs," or "just gen this". Whether it be on Pokemon Showdown, a trading site, or even GBATemp.

Truth is, I am against hacking and editing Pokemon. shocker!
I have always played legitimately. Yes, I hacked my 3DS and yes, I pirated games. But I feel as though this is different.

I am aware that in the end it's bytes of data, but I'd rather work hard and feel rewarded for breeding, EV training and battling with my Pokemon.
As a competitive Smogon and VGC player, this does get rather tiring, but that's why I use Pokemon Showdown for most of my battles. If you haven't checked out already, you should.

Personally, I do not care if other people hack their Pokemon. It's your game and your choice.

Some will disagree, and your are entitled to your opinion. This is simply my own opinion. Feel free to ignore this if you don't agree. I don't care.

I agree with you. Not just with pokemon, but cheating in general. Cheating takes away any reward from playing. Seems like any big game that comes out, someone puts together a save editor for it. Now kids that don't understand how to hex edit can cheat with no effort what so ever.

Like you, I don't really care what people do. But what I don't understand is, why even play the game if you're just going to give yourself anything that's too much of a challenge to work for. Why are you even playing?

Btw, recently got (legitimately) my first mew and celebi. After like 20 years from gen 1 and 2, and feels pretty goddamn good. Cheaters will never know that feeling.

Well, personally, I always edit the IVs of my Pokemons. Then I do the rest legitimately, but I never liked the breeding thing. I love playing Pokemon strategically, but I don't have the time to spend hours on getting a single IV perfect Pokemon.
@WeedZ I totally agree with you, but personally I love to do one thing; complete the entire game, then replay it and cheat. It's really fun, especially in hard games.

I disagree here. I personally think the reward is not in making the perfect pokemon. However it is mastering that perfect pokemon to make you perfect. If you hack pokemon you can master countless team combinations you never could before. If you want to level up afterwards for say a official competition go ahead. I know this is going against pokemons whole "bond" thing. I just think it is about what goes with what and memorizing. It is a game of concentration and skill. Not hours wasted on grinding

When I was a kid I've spended over 400 hours catching and levelling up pokemon in platinum. It almost feels like tradition to not cheat with Pokemon.

I agree. The same can be said for a few other games. Of all the games, I've never cheated in a Pokemon game because the experience is what really matters to me the most :3

Well on my end, I'm not really much of a gamer. There are only three series of games that really interest me and that's Assassin's Creed, Zelda and Pokemon and I use cheats or save editors in all of them. I don't really have the time or the patience to grind for money or experience points, so I usually give myself all level 100 Pokemon right at the start of the game and just breeze through everything. I know that sounds boring but to me, creating your very own, perfect Pokemon is really entertaining for me, as well as walking through the game, just looking at the scenery, enjoying the story and especially catching legendaries (this is actually one of the most entertaining parts of every Pokemon for me, even though I just throw a masterball at all of them, just venturing through caves and other mysterious locations makes it fun for me). I don't really need a reward or anything from video games, I'm just playing to enjoy it, not to be the best at it, but again, that mostly comes from the fact that I'm not a hardcore gamer. What also helped in having this approach at games is that I taught myself various skills by trying to write cheat codes for all kinds of games. It all started many years ago, when I was about 12, when I really found out what an Action Replay code for my GBA really did and what that bunch of numbers and letters really meant. Slowly, I got familiar with the hexadecimal system and how to change a code so that it e.g. gave me a different amount of money the original code did and so on. It wasn't until I got a DSTWO that I found out how to create cheat codes myself, which I then used on emulators, too.
After I got a NES and an Everdrive I started digging into editing the ROMs themselves and understanding ASM which I honestly still haven't figured out too well.
Basically, all I want to say is that tinkering around on games, trying to edit them in any way I please is often more fun for me than playing them.

(serious post time)
<rant>While I enjoy cheating/hacking in games, I still prefer, and do play legitimately. Yeah, I hack for mechanics testing for people on PS, but my hacking rarely leaves that. I have the time to play legitimately, and if I somehow cannot obtain what I need legitimately, I will trade for it with other people who I can trust play legitimately. I can see why people want to gen pokemon in for their own use, but when you gen something in to trade, it's just completely stupid in my opinion. If you have the ability to gen, and use it, then you shouldn't need to trade.</rant>

I agree you, the game is about training your pokemon , not just battling with them ... I don't like the ease to hack pokemon becuase make stuff that where to be rare as a cheap no fun, like the shinnies...

I get your point but I only hacked my Pokemon because shiny got really hard to catch and became a nuisance to me so I gave up and used PC-HEX++ and Pkhex to get them and at first I was so excited but then I gave up because the game got boring with just hacking the pokemon. Now I just start giving the hacked pokemon away

imo breeding for perfect iv pokemon is not rewarding at all. breeding for shinies is an other story, but im someone who doesnt do any serious pokemon battles.

I thought games were about having fun. But I guess it's cool if you wanna challenge yourself too.

Actually more often than not, cheaters know that feeling, despite cheating.

Maybe deep down they still feel the difference between receiving the legitimate one and a hacked legal one.

I sure as hell did.

I went to queue for the serial codes, despite hacking wondercards ><

I'd feel rewarded for actually doing something and work hard in real life instead of wasting the time to breed for a 'perfect' Pokémon. But of course everyone is entitled to their priorities.
