Windows 7; Jesus Fuck since when was it THIS bad

Alright, so I needed Windows 7 for gayming and video editing. I've had this partition with windows on it for a little bit but it was 32bit. I decided to just wipe it and start again.

Let's get some quick context to the front

This is a fresh installation of Win 7
7200RPM Hard drive
Almost never used drive
Not pirated

First off, I couldn't even install it onto the HDD the normal way off a USB. I had to burn the ISO on the hard drive and then install it that way. Thanks Microsoft.

I install it, my graphics drivers, and wifi drivers and i'm off.

So just trying to update my fucking system was a HUGE hassle. Windows doesn't offer an ISO with all updates packed in, so I had to download 300+ updates at one time. The thing is, Windows update system is so messed up and shotty, it won't update without other updates which require this update which require this update. Amazing stuff.

After that, trying to download anything was a huge hassle. Windows took 2 minutes to start up while on my 2006 Compaq it took 60.

I couldn't even play games at the end. DirectX couldn't sign some cert file and I did everything I could to make it. I couldn't even install fucking .NET for sony vegas or literally anything that runs on Windows because it always got "corrupted".

Also, about those updates? It stopped at 64% and wouldn't download them anymore. With the error "Windows is trying to install other updates right now. Try again in a few minutes"

I'm going to Windows 10. Wish me luck

Comments

When "everything" gets "corrupted", blame the hard drive. And even when programs don't work as fast as they should.

It doesn't matter if the hard drive is "brand new".

Yeah, I'd definitely do some checks on the disk itself. Sounds like one of my old laptop HDDs before it bit the dust. 7200RPM doesn't mean a whole lot either if the drive has a massive request load, is running at SATA-I speeds, or is spending too much time correcting for errors.

While Windows 7 was undoubtedly the best Windows release of the last dozen years, you're forgetting that it's unsupported software. There's no benefit to MS releasing a new Service Pack because it undermines the goal of getting everyone running Windows 10. It's also pretty shoddy at handling GPT/UEFI installation, which is why DVD-based installation is usually necessary on modern systems.

I install windows 7 or 10 at least a couple times a day. 10 is far nicer to deal with. Even so I've built a win7 disc with the update rollup they put out a while back so it's not so bad setting up. I use a downloaded copy of driverpack solutions which usually has all the drivers. I would always recommend win10 over 7 as long as your pc isn't really old.

Windows 7 is a lot better than Windows 10. (opinion) I would take it any day. I never had any of those issues. It's probably your drive.

I really feel that Windows 10 is just a '' '' '' beefed up '' '' '' version of Windows 7.
Plus, they added Cortana, Microsoft's helpful assistant at revealing your personal information (not new anyways), which just searches whatever you say 70% of the time.
They also removed Control Panel, seriously, what the hell were they thinking?
The only clear advantage I can see in Windows 10 is that I have seen faster booting times, and maybe security updates, but that's about it, for me.

It is possible to boot the Windows 7 installer off of USB on a UEFI system, just it involves extracting a boot file from an archive and replacing the existing boot file. I forget the exact steps and it's a PITA to find them again.

I have zero luck with Win7. Every time I use it, something goes wrong. Like this last time, I installed it to a separate hard disk as a dual boot on my Win10 machine (to play 32-bit Skyrim on, Win10 and Skyrim don't get along). What happens? I walk away ONE TIME during a Win7 bootup, only to come back and find Win7's chkdsk reindexing and "repairing" files on all of my drives and partitions, when before there had been no issue. It murdered my Win10 bootloader files, rendering the system completely unrecoverable (I tried everything I could find, over the course of a week, nothing got it working again). Had to reinstall, and I'm still slowly putting the OS back together.

@dAVID_ W10 definitely has a control panel (win+R > "control")... the difference with 8 is that the UWP settings now actually cover a good amount of features so you don't need the control panel every 10 seconds

Yeah I consider Windows 7 to be past it's prime. Windows 10 is actually pretty amazing, especially the feedback program. It's amazing how many complaints and problems they actually fix every biannual update.

I would be careful with Windows Update, it has semi-bricked me two laptops (they wouldn't start up, but I could access bios settings), which I was able to recover, and fully bricked one laptop (When I press power only the power light turns on, no HDD spin sound, no signal on the screen, and I can't access the bios settings no matter what key I press)

@Arecaidian Fox Well, the good news is that the Fall update for Windows 10 fixes the VRAM bug, at the very least; if you've been having any other Skyrim issues on W10 I don't think I've been seeing them on my notebook.

@FireEmblemGuy Sadly, though the update (which I was using in Insider Preview form) does free up the memory, there's still some kind of issue with DX9 on my machine. With an ENB active, my framerate plummets to almost nothing. On Win7, no issues with ENB.

you could just not install the updates. I'm using win 7 ult 64bit on this netbook since 2012 never updated never reinstalled. Never had any problems. Since i dont update, i never seem to have the problems others have. I wonder why....
