school

I was just in my first hour class and we were taking down the schools little weather tower
I was able to keep some of the equipment that actually worked!
now I have I nice little light senser and a humidity monitor (im surprised it still works seeing how humind it normally is)

probably nothing for awhile while I rebuild my hardware collection
stepdad threw out most of my collection while we were moving

I take it you have never witnessed the start of engineering/scientist hoarding.

You keep things like this "because they might be useful", and on rare occasion it is. The rate of cycling things out to new stuff in is rather less than unity though.
Several decades later
You have a warehouse/workshop full of cool shit, some call it a rusty treasure cave, others an empire of dirt.
You kick the bucket
Your widow or relatives take all the stuff from your warehouse/workshop to yard sale/car boot sale/jumble sale
Therein younger equivalent of you rummages through boxes of your cool shit and gives those surviving you a fraction of what the thing would probably be worth to buy new/on ebay.

Cue about 2m55 into
