How do people go with linux...

I'm not trying to rant about linux or anything but it feels like a large pain to work with. I can't seem to get usb persistence so my settings and shit save. I also can't seem to get installation of programs to always work, which is made worse by how I can't even have them stay when they do install. Why does this have to be so frustrating... why do the good things in life have to treat me like this

Just curious. What did you use, what was your hardware, and when?
Honestly most of the stuff I got to work, when it works, works damn well.
But there were times where shit simply didn't cooperate at all *glares at the laptop currently in use*

No idea. I work daily with macOS, Windows, and Linux and it all works good enough to me.
I wouldn't say that any of them seem particularly a pain to me.

I have to say nonetheless that I don't use USB based distros, but an actual real system installed on the HDD. Sure the ramdisks created by USB distros are volatile and making changes persistent may be a PITA, I can't say, I don't have experience with that, I only use USB distros for emergencies and data recovery, I never needed persistence on those.

Shouldn't you try to install the system on your PC? I mean, if you want to use it daily.

I would go for the classic, not the shiny Linux distros.
I am a Debian guy, people sure would find me boring, but I like it.
Why don't you try something well known and widely supported first, like Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc. Or even Fedora if you want to try the latest bells and whistles and have a system that will probably crash and be unsupported next week when a new version releases (not recommended).

quick question, should I partition off JUST enough space, perhaps round up a few mb's just for what I write linux to or is there a reason I should give more?

@jt_1258 just make sure to have plenty of space to be comfortable.
I currently have 40 GBs split between my partitions to use Linux, and it's just good enough.

ok, so a small partition made for linux and the rest for storage as far as I can see, I'm trying to use a 32 flash drive that I still need about 12 gigs for my rythm game crap

what's a good program for flashing the image to the drive? I can't quite remember what I used the last time I tried

Live ISO. Can be CD or flash drive. They're temporary environments meant for installing the system or troubleshooting a broken subject. Temporary meaning gone when the power goes out.

Not meant for long term use.

Just to be a pedant "not meant for long term use" is not accurate in all cases, the first exception most meet being http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview and Getting Started.htm which has long been designed to save to USB drives and temp files (and these days can do online). Equally with the prevalence of browser logins/shared states and most things being done in a browser you can probably get a lot done with a typical live cd.

What others have said probably is what the OP encountered but I do enjoy being the pedant.

    I've been to his chicken restaurant he started in his 2nd movie, Holy Chicken, was pretty good. It is only 15-20 miles from me in Ohio. It only lasted 1 yr or so then closed tho.
