Christmas mail thieves, hope you're happy

So I have a friend whom I've known for almost a decade now. We're online friends but we're closer than most irl friends become. I know she had wanted a DS for years and I had shown her pictures and videos of my DSTWO way back.

Fast forward to Christmas 2017, and I spot a DSTWO for sale in the Trading Area of this forum. I thought it would make the perfect gift for my friend. The kind Temper gladly sold it to me with a discounted price as well as provided a microSD card. I received it and got to work with setting it up for my friend, adding all the games I thought she'd enjoy as well as all of my save files for her to be able to "explore" my childhood with the DS (using the DSTWO's Save Slot feature which allows for up to 4 individual saves per ROM).
I even loaded it with some songs and videos for her to test media playback on the DSTWO. Not only that, I recorded the entire process of me setting it up on the computer as well as testing it on the DS, edited them all, and sent them to her, which made her really look forward to receiving the card for Christmas. She had found a couple cheap DS systems locally and was planning on picking one of them up after receiving my package.

She received her package today. With a torn hole in the envelope. The DSTWO and microSD were stolen, among her other mail. I don't think I've ever felt such sadness before: this meant so much to her, to us. She would have finally been able to experience the DS library, with all of its wonderful games. But some jerk decided it was better off with them and just took it.

Here's a pic of the packages' contents:

The bubble wrap folded over at the crease to ensure the contents would arrive safely. The DSTWO and SD adapter were put in the DS game card + SD card holder that the kind temper dudenator sent them in, and was taped to the bubble wrap to prevent it from shaking during transit and ripping through the envelope.

Here's how it looked when she got it:

Some of her other mail had also been stolen. It truly pains me to hear this happened to her, especially on Christmas. This is the first physical item I've ever sent her, a gift that would provide hundreds or even thousands of hours of entertainment for her, and all she got was my Christmas card (which I'm grateful wasn't also stolen.. SMH).

I've already promised her I'll get her another DSTWO, but.. how? How will I do that? How will I get it to her without it being stolen again? Will putting it in a box help, or will it make it even more likely to be stolen, as usually more valuable goods are shipped in boxes? DSTWO cards are super hard to find, too, and I only want the best for her..

I've never had this happen to me before and have never heard of it happening to anyone I know either. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian and the stereotypes about us are true when it comes to being polite and whatnot. Maybe I've just been lucky. Maybe this is just as unlikely to happen where she lives as it is here and she just got very unlucky. All I care for right now is to get her a replacement.
I had made a backup of the microSD just before I shipped her package so setup of a new card is not an issue at all. I just need to find another DSTWO and figure out a safe way of getting it to her this time.. Which I honestly feel shouldn't have to be a precaution that has to be made in the first place.

Thanks for reading my rant. I hope you all had a more fortunate Christmas. And if not, feel free to share your stories. And know that for those in the same situation as my friend and I - or worse - I truly know how it feels and hope somehow something good comes of the situation.

UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that it is more likely the rollers at the post office are the culprit here and not mail theft. I now know I should have sent this in a bubble mailer. I at least feel better about the situation now and am more hopeful on getting her a new one. My hunt begins now..

Did you send the package in a normal envelope or a bubble mailer? The imprints of the roller as well as the smashed cartridge case leads me to believe it when through the carrier's letter rollers it smashed/pushed the contents of the envelope out.

Either way, require a signature for delivery/put insurance on future packages you send to her place.

It wasn't in a bubble mailer. It was in a normal paper envelope with bubble wrap coating the outside. I will definitely ensure my packages from now on: up until now, I thought it was as useless as those extended warranties you can buy for video games.

The fact that some of her other mail was also stolen had me believe this was stolen. How likely would you say it is that it was the rollers? If that's the issue here I'm glad that the solution would be to send it in a proper bubble mailer next time.

Wow, I legitimately feel bad for you.

Hope you can get it replaced somehow!

Quite likely. In the first picture of the received package you case see the outline of the case dudenator sent the cartridge in. Multiple outlines in fact meaning it went through a couple of rollers. The hole that the case went though (Or at least part of the case along with the contents.) isn't a clean cut. (Not saying someone who steals items from letters is going to bring scissors but why not just take the entire envelope?) Along with that the other part of the case was smashed up. (When it went through the rollers.)

Lastly if you notice the chunk of case she does have is the half with the tape on it that was holding it to the bubble wrap. Which answers the question as to why the entire game case didn't go through the hole.

What you say at least restore a little hope in me. I just don't know why the lady at the post office didn't say anything when she noticed the chunk in the envelope.. If you couldn't tell I don't send things out via mail often so I certainly didn't know it would present an issue. I was also wondering why the thief didn't just take the entire envelope, so what you say makes a lot of sense to me.

Sad way to lean a lesson, but if you're sending anything of value always, always send signed for and insured.

I agree @Pleng. From now on I will be sure to do so. In this case however, I'm more disappointed because DSTWO cards are hard to find, and not so much that was a financial loss (because, again, the kind Temper who sold me his gave me a good deal).

@epickid37 Thank you, I hope so too. I'll post a thread in the Trading Area and search elsewhere as well until I find another one for her.

It's sad that something you trust blindy and take it for granted can end up doing shit like this.

I feel sorry for you lad.

A bit strange maybe. DS flashcards are not iphones to start "theft business". May be size and form of SD cardbox worked as bait, at least SD cards are easy to sell fast, but it's not big money deal (but may be it's common trend to send 256+Gb cards in your area nowdays).
Anyway it's no good. I'm too was mad last year when someone stole my Vegemite from AU packets twice in a row (There are no any vegemites where i'm living).
Take slim carton box/folder (good thick carton, not very wide and not very small, DIY also work). Scotch tape flashcard solid inside box. Scotch tape box corners and edges. And only after put it inside post's bubble packet. Send it registered, signed-for and what else it called in your area (may be even via courier/commerce servece, but sometimes it's not good if packet goes to another coutry).
Or since flashcart is thin - send (try to) it inside magazine as paper-documents. Who will serial steal ikea catalogs?

I ordered two iPad Air once, both were Christmas presents. The package arrived damaged and, to my surprise, both iPads were missing from the boxes. They told me that they could refund the shipment of $15. I sued them and won.

I'm unsure if you can take legal action for not getting something like a flashcard used to bypass security, but I hope you can get to the bottom of this. If not, always pay extra for tracking and avoid using services made by scum like the people that were supposed to get your mail safe.

Best of luck!

i am very sorry for you mr sonic rings... I hope you can get a new dstwo very soon and send it to your friend so she can enjoy the ds games!
next time maybe you could try using fedexes or ups. a bit expensive but never had any problem with them (while my items got lost quite a few times when i used the classic postal service)

You should check for finger prints and things of that sort, also even if it is not ensured the shipping service is directly responsible for the damage.
Also get a different company next time. Is it Canada Post? Also some smashed parts should remain there if it's the roller.
