Police shooting 4 years ago

Just heard about a police shooting case four years ago. Only in the U.S., of course.....

A guy is peacefully listening to music in his garage. A woman walking by takes offence at the noise and calls the police. The police come, and knock, and the guy answers. He puts the garage door back down and presumably goes to turn down the music (or maybe he refuses, who knows). The police shoot four times through the garage door, with at least one shot going through his head. Their justification? That he had a gun in his back pocket. Wasn't even pointing it at them or anything.

Not only this but there was a civil suit for wrongful death, and the victim's family was awarded $4 - the poor guy's life was deemed to only be worth $4. The police appealed and it was brought down to 4c. Then later it was thrown out and the family got nothing, not even the 4c. The police got away scott free - not charged with anything.

Even if you love your guns, and think everyone should be allowed to carry them everywhere, etc etc, apparently carrying one, even if you mind your own business in your own home and threaten nobody, is enough to allow the police to shoot you dead with no consequences. So probably not so smart to carry one around. If a policeman feels like killing someone today, and they see you with a gun - they can just kill you with no repercussions. The police are scarier than criminals - at least criminals have to weigh up whether they're willing to risk jail etc so they'll be less inclined to kill. The police can just kill whomever they feel like.

Just another story to add to the makes-me-feel-sick list.

America grows more authoritarian and closer to a police state daily. Even despite that, the law obviously doesn't apply equally to those of large financial wealth, or those who work within the justice system. I'm worried this nation no longer has the sort of moral or ethical backbone necessary to combat our descent into subjective law enforcement. It doesn't help that the president himself flouts and makes a mockery of the law on a near daily basis.

armed and drunk :( is never a good mix
as for peacefully his neighbours didn't think so, thats why they called the cops
anf his own peers awarded the minimum amount.

@JoeBloggs the gun was in his back pocket, not in his hand. He wasn't being drunk in public, only in his own home. So if you are drunk in your own home and own a gun, that means you deserve to die?

Also, it was someone walking past that called the police, not a neighbour (that's what I heard).

2 sides to every story, your painting a picture of him being peaceful, the other extreme is that when he opened the garage door he had a gun in his hand, saw it was the cops, put the gun in his back pocket and shut the door.

the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle and something you or I will never know as we were not there.

have you ever tried to deal with people who are drunk or high on drugs ? my wife is an A & E doctor and just like the cops have to treat or deal with them

why would someone walking by call the cops ? it makes no sense.

@Quantumcat Lol, they are not going to come to my house and shoot me. Cops don't even bother you if you don't break laws. I hardly ever get pulled over by a cop. They don't scare me much. Sometimes I say Hi.

It's even worse..... Since the police were cleared of any wrong doing, the department only had to pay 1% of that. So they literally wrote the court a check for $0.04 and that was that. We have a HUGE "blue line" problem in this country. Any government official accused of breaking ANY law is more often than not given benefit of doubt outside of inarguable cases. If they can make an excuse for their actions they do, and it's like "Oh yeah that makes sense to us! Dismissed!" Or even in the rare cases they get convicted they don't even lose their livelihood. No one cares that no one polices the police, or the fact that our government system of checks and balances hasn't worked in decades. My country is every man for himself, and good luck to you if you find yourself on the wrong side of the "man".

@SG what law did this guy break? Are you saying playing loud music is a crime punishable by death? Should police respond to complaints of teenage parties by killing the offenders?

@JoeBloggs if the gun was in his back pocket that means he wasn't pointing it at them when they shot him - so he wasn't threatening them. I can understand police shooting someone if they are threatening to shoot the police or someone else - they have to act immediately and don't have the option of, say, tackling them or some other non-lethal force. But in this case he wasn't threatening anyone. Yet the police are still judged blameless for killing him.

I can't imagine anyone reading the link Beethoven posted and not feeling appalled.

Anyway, meanwhile on another planet (not too far from where I live), a police car crashes into someone, while responding to an emergency. The police officer gives CPR but the woman dies later. The police officer is getting investigated to make sure he followed procedures. http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2018-...es-after-crash-with-police-car-in-may/9833118

@Quantumcat
the only people that know what really went on are the victim and the 2 cops. how far away was his daughter and other witnesses, could they really see and hear everything ?

Culture has receded. The police you say, but it is just a mirror.
Police state? Anarchy?... or just barbarism?

I fear they will self destroy, and I am terrorized they may take down everybody else in the process.

This is why I don't like the USA.... and hell i'm from there what sucks even more no money to up and move some place safer.....

@Quantumcat I've been to many parties with loud music that were shut down by cops and I never got shot.

That Dell data breach is worse than people probably realize....

When I worked for Dell we had access to data about military contracts and addresses for high ranking people.

I personally handled a call from the second highest person at Raytheon. That call bothered me a lot... The guy was nice and smart what bothered me was the way management basically just blew him off instead of going the extra mile to help him.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
In the end that call ended up costing Dell millions in lost contracts with Raytheon, and really the issue could have been solved for like 450 bucks lol
