I'm obsessed with flat earthers

Lately, I've been completely enthralled by the existence of people who genuinely believe the Earth is flat. Like, how are there seriously THIS many people who can't comprehend basic math and observation? It's seriously insane to me and I can't help but obsessively watch videos of these people trying to explain why they believe Earth is flat and I don't know why it's so intriguing. I guess just the scope of how large this group is has been something I simply can't wrap my mind around. Now it's my goal to meet one of these people in real life to disprove their terrible logic with elementary-level education. Which, this desire somewhat makes me think I'm being a jerk, but I'll also be potentially helping someone not look crazy in their future (If I could even convince them, which based on my "research," seems unlikely), so I'm fine with it. I don't know why this is a blog, but I felt weird about my obsession, so I thought I'd share, lol.

what I don't understand is this: have they never been on a plane? If they haven't, why don't they for irrefutable proof? Is it fear of being wrong?

I've flown from the Middle East to the US by flying East and wrapping back round to the western hemisphere. If the earth wasn't spherical I guess I'd have just flown into the void

@Pokepicker
No, I don't have DSL, I have broadband.

@Lucifer666
They think planes fly in a circle, constantly turning to either side, despite any evidence to suggest so.

@Lucifer666 obviously, you're flying in a circle. If earth was a globe, the pilot would have to dip the nose constantly and, at some point, fly upside down which the passengers should notice.

Note that flat earthers deny gravity as well.

Gravity simply doesn't exist, and neither does rotation. Everything observable in the sky is moved in a circular motion by unknown forces beneath a large dome, according to them. Also, as stated below me, some of them think it's an infinite plane as well.

@TotalInsanity4 They deny gravity. They say things fall to the ground because they are denser ("they" as in "things", not "they" as in "Flat Earthers") than air.

What I haven't seen addressed by any Flat-Earther is the fact that density needs gravity to "work".

Rotation? What for? I don't think their flat earth model requires a rotation at all. Note that they don't believe Earth is a disc floating in space, but it's an infinite plane with all the stars and planets above it.

The only way to proof them that earth is not flat is by taking them all out space and show them. All of them otherwise they will claim NASA bribed and or brainwashed the others.

After tour around the eath 6/10 will believe and 4/10 will claim NASA did not take them to space but it was all hollywood/VR.

Those 4/10 you throw out in space and leave them there. Problem solved I think?

Yeah, but what a waste of valuable fuel and resources. Better to leave them all around for my personal enjoyment and pure comedy gold.

@lolboy nice idea. If that ever happens, I'll claim I am a flat earther, too. Won't say "no" to a free space flight.

Ok, so now that we've addressed gravity and rotation:

If the earth doesn't rotate, then why does a plane ride going from east to west take less time than west to east?
If gravity doesn't exist, how do planes work in the first place? Are they a facade hiding a Zeppelin underneath?
If the earth is flat and doesn't rotate, why don't airlines use the Arctic circle as a shortcut to the other hemisphere; after all, the shortest distance between between two points is a straight line, and lemme tell you, EVERYONE wants to book the flights that advertise shortest travel time

To my knowledge, the direction of a plane ride shouldn't affect flight time regardless, as the plane should be spinning in relation to the atmosphere on a globe Earth. I assume they'll say planes somehow have enough power in their engines to propel them through the air Gliding still works since they believe in wind. I assume by "other hemisphere," you're referring to the opposite side of the northern hemisphere. Planes don't go over the North pole, because NASA is hiding Santa too, and the airlines are in on it.

EDIT: I looked it up and yeah, flight times do vary by a small amount. There's a 10% difference depending on direction. The more you know.

@linuxares again, FE doesn't claim earth is a disc floating in space. They claim it's an infinite plane. There is no edge for cats to push things off of.

@TotalInsanity4 I don't think earths rotation has any influence on travel time (neither on a flat earth, nor on a globe earth.) . Planes should take the same time from east to west as they do from west to east as the atmosphere rotates with the earth (or stands still on a flat earth). Winds (for example in the jet stream) could have an effect though. But these could be part of the FE model, too.

It's actually not possible to disprove it with elementary-level education, at least without providing some data and assuming it's true. And it's not simple data. Eratosthenes unlike many believe NEVER proved anything. He just calculated the radius ASSUMING it's round. I have actually researched the matter quite a bit and have actually demonstrated at a very acceptable level that the earth is not flat using flight data. There is really no simple way to do it without some modern-ish data, and you're very moronic if you think flat earthers are stupid while you believe something without being able to prove it.

@Localhorst86 if you ever seen a cat, they don't follow the laws of physics either. They're liquids after all.

@Localhorst86 well... it DOES, soooooo....

And also, does that mean that wind ALWAYS travels east to west in the flat earth model? (I'd rather that be answered after my other questions)

@bodefuceta how "modern" are we talking? Ballistics engineers have known that you need to take the curvature of the earth into account if you want to hit a target for nearly as long as people have been trying to reliably aim cannons

Maybe great old Elon can ship us all out there for a round trip. He has to return to his own galaxy at some point.

    Usually when such a big title leaks the Temp will be the first to report about it (going off of historical reports here, Pokemon SV being the latest one I can recall seeing pop up here)

    I want a 120hz 4k tv but crazy how more expensive the 120hz over the 60hz are. Or even more crazy is the price of 8k's.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    No real point since movies are 30fps
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    Not a big movie buff, more of a gamer tbh. And Series X is 120hz 8k ready, but yea only 120hz 4k games out right now, but thinking of in the future.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    Mostly why you never see TV manufacturers going post 60hz
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    I only watch tv when i goto bed, it puts me to sleep, and I have a nas drive filled w my fav shows so i can watch them in order, commercial free. I usually watch Married w Children, or South Park

    Google them basically web crawlers to movie sites
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    oh you mean the 3rd party apps on Kodi, yea i know what you mean, yea there are still a few cool ones, in fact watched the new planet of the apes movie other night w wifey thru one, was good pic surprisingly, not a cam
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    Damn, only $2.06 and free shipping. Gotta cost more for them to ship than $2.06
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
    I got my Dad a firestick for Xmas and showed him those 3rd party sites on Kodi, he loves it, all he watches anymore. He said he has got 3 letters from AT&T already about pirating, but he says f them, let them shut my internet off (He wants out of his AT&T contract anyways)
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    That's where stremio comes to play never got a letter about it
