Is RGB important, or just stupid?

———
Because I got a job recently and I am starting to take in cash, I wanna spend all my money on a high end computer and have been doing research.
The plan was to get a good build for around the $2000~$2250 range.

Something that I noticed while dicking around in PCPartPicker is that you can find an identical RGB version of every part for around $5-$20 more.

Because I like rainbow shit and the cool little effects I naturally made a build with RGB everything. Even the fucking RAM.

I was pretty proud of myself until I realized that if I didn’t do any RGB, I would end up getting a rig that’s just as powerful but costs about $250 bones less.
That is quite some cash.
It would reduce my total from $2300 to $2050.

I also realized that having an RGB mobo, ram, fans, strips, and cooler could actually end up being overkill.

At first, that seemed stupid, but then I realized that having a blinding rainbow cube that’s constantly having epilepsy fits next to you while your trying to fucking work is going to eventually become annoying.

Look at this, for example:
View attachment 160210

It seems awesome at first glance, but imagine being right next to it trying to work.
Now imagine trying to work with the colors changing, or better yet, flickering.
It could end up driving me bonkers.

Then again, it’s always customizable. But even then would it be worth $250 more?

And what about cable management?
With 8 fans and 4 strips, plus the lights for all the other shit? Would it impact that?

Is there a need for some RGB but not to much? Are certaint components better in RGB?

Should I just disregard looks altogether and focus on actual productivity?
What should I do?

PS: here is my planned build so far; https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZdRb9J

Going to keep checking market and make some changes down the line so nothings final yet, this is just where I stand currently.

PPS: Thank god AMD exists. The build would end up being 150 bones more regularless of RGB lel.
Shintel can kiss my white moldy ass!

Anything RGB in my PC (just the motherboard actually) is set to a static blue color to match other non-RGB components in my build, namely the case fan LEDs. I like it for the reason that it can be customized and even turned off, I think, but I wouldn't want rainbow vomit in my PC. It's important to some people, but there's no necessity for it since it's purely cosmetic. It's one of those things you either like or don't like, and it's just an opinion. I think it can look good in moderation, but I wouldn't pay to have every part have some sort of RGB-lighting.

In summary, though, if you think it's worth the money go for it. You could even just do some nice static colors using all that lighting, but I think it's overkill to RGB "all the things".

If it's going to make you happy of course it's worth it.People spend what that entire PC costs on drugs regularly so my thought process is why not?If it's your dream PC,I think you will end up regretting it if you get it without RGB later tbh.

I don't do the unicorn vomit. Having the option to set various colors for background lighting is great. "Important" really depends on you.

Those are colors. I'd say is very important for how things look. :ninja:

I mean even that youtube channel My life in gaming talks about it all the time.

I've never used RGB fans myself. RGB really isn't something I care about, personally. I just use some static blue LED fans from Rosewill in my case. My case is also not too pretty, so asking me for advice might not be the best idea if you're looking for aesthetics. I put my budget into performance.

Eh, I may be biased but I've always considered RGB as a fad and nothing more. I see it as a distracting waste of energy and money. However, at the end of the day, it's down to personal preference so if you like it, I don't blame you.

I did end up getting RGB parts for my system but that's because I had very good deals on them, sometimes they cost me even less than their non-RGB variants. If you ask me which are the flashiest RGB components you could get (not counting components outside the case like the keyboard & mouse) then it'd be the fans - but 8 seem a bit too overkill to me both in terms of lighting and performance. If you take a look at some benchmarks online you'll see that 3 system fans is the sweet spot: add any more and you'll see negligible gains, remove even just one and you'll get a rather noticeable temperature increase. Not to mention that 8 RGB fans are bound to be a little bit too distracting imho. That aside, four RGB strips are probably going to be fine.

Regarding cable management, a few more wires and a controller isn't going to make a big difference as long as you get a pretty big case. I'm not talking about a mammoth of a case, mind you, just something that has a spacious back panel. RGB or not I still have nightmares dealing with my old one where there was just enough space to route the mobo power connector and a few other ones... Do yourself a favour, unless you're going with a Mini ITX/SFF build, buy a good, spacious case.

Lastly, if RGB vs non-RGB components would make that much of a price difference then I'd just ditch RGB altogether and buy a mechanical keyboard with genuine Cherry MX switches instead of a mechanical-feeling one. Trust me, I've bought a Masterkeys Pro S with brown switches sometime ago and I'd never go back to a rubber dome now. I went with browns because I do a mix of gaming and typing but of course go with reds for gaming or blues for typing. With that much difference you'd probably be able to get a good gaming mouse too.

...And that's about it. Again, this is coming from someone who's already admitted to being biased but hey, I hope I'll be at least a bit helpful! :P

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy rgb stuff. If something happens to have it, then fine, I'll just turn it off. I wouldn't pay extra or get a worse component just because it has rgb though.

"I will make something work, tell you why it no longer works or why it will fail. Call someone else, anybody else, to make it look pretty."
That would be my general philosophy of work/business/whatever it is I do. That and I don't paint.

Lights annoy me and multicoloured would do even more so. Indeed in the past I have ripped out LEDs from fans, only to find myself having to solder something in its place as some oxygen thief of a designer thought them essential and would not run the fan without them.

If you absolutely must then there are rolls of LED tape with such things on. Probably in the ten or so dollars a metre (more than enough to wind around the case) and typically get powered by 12V which you can easily wire into a spare molex (if female molex connectors are hard to find I typically just cannibalise a molex to sata power adapter).
Not quite what I was thinking but https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-12-Volt-Color-Changing-Controller-2034RGB-R2/dp/B0040FJ27S should be doable enough, and a tenth the price of what you were initially considering.

I personally don't like having an RGB cycle on my mouse/keyboard because it can be distracting.
So most of the time I just set it to a static color I like.
(I don't own an RGB keyboard, but I do own a G203, and it has RGB functionality).

Lol I'd at least try to go for a theme, for example synth-wave colors are nice. Though my PC does have a minimalist look to it, black and white with red accents and LEDs, so obviously our tastes are very different. ^_^

@Xzi
Well the whole point of RGB is that you can make it whatever, right?
Although the rainbow vomit is pretty awesome.

@Paolosworld Yeah, I suppose modern RGB components can all be set to independent colors via the motherboard. Even still, I find too many LEDs a bit gaudy, and distracting while gaming.
