It takes time to become a safe driver, but quite longer to be accepted as one

I failed my first driving license test. knowing that most people don't pass the first time, it didn't surprise me.
What did surprise me was how hard it is to attain perfection. That's what they expect from me, to perfectly obey the law and not put anyone in danger when I drive.
They expect me to do so even at the most dangerous circumstances, such as going through a lane which half of it is blocked by construction workers, without going over the restricting line which most corners have in order to divide the road.
It happened to me, and if only i turned my wheel a bit more to the left, the instructor wouldn't touch the wheel himself. Even if i wanted to remain optimistic, from the moment he had to touch the wheel, i had a feeling i wouldn't pass the test.
as an after-thought, it actually makes me feel bad, but at the same time i feel confident getting to know later what counts as an error and what's not.
The good thing is that i can always try again around 2-3 weeks later, and i can always try again and again. it's not like high school exams where the amount of times people could retake the finals was limited to certain dates and only about 2-3 times.

Unfortunately, due to holidays and stuff, the actual list of errors will be sent to me only tomorrow. usually it's sent either at the same day i take the test, or the day afterwards.
It sucks because I basically need to stay in the dark for a few days, not knowing completely what i did wrong. at that short time, it's a waste. i want to take a few more lessons and go for another shot!

I wouldn't say i'm a bad driver, but i'm not good enough to be recognized legally as a safe driver. There aren't really any other options besides taking the test again, but at the very least, i would feel less stressed and have time to improve specifically on my mistakes, so i won't repeat them ever again.

After all, there are roads with more than a single lane, and there are roads with more than a single driver.
ironic as it is, it's in my nickname.

When you book in another test, you should ask your driving instructor to take you on the test circuit. That way you'll know everything there is to watch out for, and nothing takes you by surprise. For example on mine, there is a long straight downhill section where the speed limit changes from 80 to 60 km/hr for no good reason that I can see. The instructor took me through there and made sure to mention where to start slowing down so that I would be going the right speed when going past the sign and I wouldn't need to panic-brake as the sign takes you a bit by surprise. With the construction worker part, the instructor should be able to tell you what you need to do in this section - eg maybe there is a law that all construction zones are 40 km/hr or you must leave a 1m gap between you and any worker, and what to do when that isn't possible (maybe you have to stop and wait for them to get out of the way for example).

I only passed on my second attempt and that was probably because I got lucky and got a really nice tester the second time. I realised half way through the test that my door wasn't shut properly and it was rattling - I ended up opening it and shutting it more firmly when we were stopped at a traffic light. I thought for sure I was going to fail, but nope!! I was ecstatic.

Hello.:)

If I remember correct,I get my "Pink rag" as we in Austria say to the Driving License BEFORE the EU take over and make a Plastic Card of them,in October 1988.

On the THIRD attempt.....

First strike: I do not know until today exactly what happened. On an actual Driiving School Test it is comparable with 99 percent of correct answered Questions. No Idea....and of course no Driving at that day.

14 days later.....

Again I have to pay for the Exam and have to do some additional Driving Lessons. $$$$

Second Strike: I do know exactly what happend today. We were a Group of 10 if I remember correctly and I am the last for to the oral exam - the exam time was pretty much over .That is not exactly my concern on that day,it is not a exam on Time but the "inspector" (an other Person than last time) apparently did not have any more:

First Question - instead of 3 possible correct answers I gave him only two.
"Thank you,come again in 2 weeks...." :O:O:O

14 days later....

Again I have to pay for the Exam and have to do some additional Driving Lessons. $$$$

and look.....after only 2 Questions the "Inspector" (again an other Person this time) says "ok,you can go outside and wait for the Driving Exam"
10 Minutes Driving and parking the Car correctly.........Yes I got it.:yay:

Yes, that was it in 1988.....:)

I'm struggling to understand how this could be a surprise to you. Especially the "not put anyone in danger" part.

@Pleng oh, i already knew that. but i was surprised over how hard it is to do all of that perfectly compared to how my teacher described it a lot over my lessons.

Ah so you were surprised how difficult it is. That makes more sense. The way I read it, it looked like you were angry about the fact that it was being expected of you.

Well keep at it, anyway :)

@Quantumcat That's the plan. we're gonna work ONLY on the errors from the first attempt, so i won't repeat them again in the second attempt.
Thing is, even though he touched the wheel one time, and noted something about turning one time, he didn't do anything else.
That doesn't mean those are the only errors, but i guess i'll have to wait till tomorrow and see everything i did wrong.

@Pleng weeeell, not gonna lie, but i'm only angry over the fact that my teacher told me to remain optimistic after the test. he probably already realized i won't pass.
so next time if i make an obvious mistake, i would have no reason to remain optimistic for the result.

honestly with me i kept overthinking things, when you start to think about staying in the lines it makes you doubt yourself then you start making mistakes, same on the test i feel the stress of knowing your being judged makes you second guess yourself and you start overcompensating for things you will instinctively be able to do, best advice i can give is have more faith in yourself and don't let the "test" cause you to doubt yourself

personally i took 5 tries to pass, but i kept trying to rush things, just take lessons till it feels like second nature, once your confident, carry that over into your test and you will be fine, for me it was only once i started feeling like "oh well not a big deal if a fail" that i passed as it wasn't built up to be a big deal anymore

@gamesquest1 i'm not doubting myself as much as it seems in my blog. it's more like i'm being fully aware of my capabilities. i probably had tough luck on the first test, having to handle a really inconvenient situation which rarely happened to me in my lessons, but as long as i gain experience, i can get through these problems better.
To me, failing the test only feels like a big deal because i'm a very sensitive guy and can't help it but endure with those feelings, but in my mind, i always thought about that i have more chances and failing isn't the end of the world.
in simple words, i'm putting priority over thinking and not feeling at the time of the test, but unfortunately, it leads to a burst of feelings later on, even if it's on the positive side or the negative side.
it really makes me sound dramatic, but i'd rather express stuff that way than with a half-baked speech.

yeah i that's what happened on my first test, someone decided to pull up and get out their car right in the middle of the road, unfortunately i decided to drive around them and for whatever reason that failed me , i didn't know how long they were going to be so if i had just sat behind them with people queueing up behind me i could've been there for god knows how long, but apparently because of the layout of the road that was what i was expected to do :teach:,
I'm sure in the real world what i did would be what anyone would do but for the purpose of the test i HAD to wait there behind them no matter how long they disappeared for, i guess it was that first fail that made me paranoid about the future tests as it had me double guessing my decisions from what would make sense logically to what makes sense from a strict checklist perspective

in florida i learned to drive by driving my dad truck on the dirt roads. then moved to regular roads then highway. When i took the drivers test i was like to myself wtf, this is the test? its simpler then driving on a dirt road. They dont even take you out on the real roads. they have a stupid course behind the building. They do troll people as there was a stop sign when entering the course that was in the trees. if you missed that one they just fail you after having you do the entire test lol. I saw that shit in the trees. They could not aint troll me.
